A female Orange-tailed Mining Bee (sometimes called the Early Mining Bee) stands on a young mahonia leaf facing right to left across the image. She's just a little larger than a honey bee. Her thorax is red above and grey below, and she has a grey face. Her abdomen is black, and almost hairless apart from a bright orange tip, and she has yellowish middle and rear legs, with an extravagant white pollen brush.
