Photo of 2 fungal structures on the ground. The structures are whitish globes with holes in the top and 8 pointed petal-like brownish structures attached to the bases of the globes laying on the ground. A thumb and forefinger hold one of the petal-like structures for scale.
#EarthStars are fungi in the group Gasteromycetes, or “stomach fungi.” Their characteristic, flower-like shape forms as the thicker outer tissue (the exoperidium) splits into an array of 4 to 8 points. When triggered by a falling raindrop, earthstars expel billions of spores from their hollow cores.
