A sculpture in white marble of a man and woman. The man stands with his right leg straight, left leg slightly bent, with the foot on a ball from a ball and chain. His left arm is raised, elbow bent, fist just over head height; around it is wrapped a piece of broken chain. His right arm reaches down to the right shoulder of the woman kneeling on one knee next to his right leg. She gazed out and upward; her hands are clasped at her chin as though in prayer or thanksgiving.

As a Black and Indigenous woman, Edmonia Lewis overcame prejudice and defied societal expectations to become a successful sculptor. Her Death of Cleopatra exemplifies how she navigated her own path through subject matter and artistic tradition. Edmonia Lewis's best-known work in her lifetime was the Death of Cleopatra, a twelve-foot tall sculpture weighing two tons that took four years to execute. Exhibited at the 1876 Centennial, Cleopatra was called 'the grandest statute in the exposition.'

Facing racism at Oberlin College, Lewis moved to Boston, then Rome in 1865, where she found creative freedom. Her 1876 sculpture The Death of Cleopatra broke norms, portraying raw defiance instead of romanticized history. #EdmoniaLewis #WomenInArt
