A Greater Flamingo wading through green water
For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, Reflections, a Flamingo at #ElHondo Nature Reserve, Alicante 🇪🇸. When my in-laws retired and bought a house on the Costa Blanca, I never imagined it would be just up the road from one of Southern Europe’s major wetlands where huge flocks of flamingos gather to breed.

Three flamingos, all showing head and necks to some degree. The closest on is looking towards the viewer, the one on the right is in profile & is looking left, towards the third flamingo. The one on the left is also in profile & we see its body and it's looking right. All showing the special pink beaks, black tipped. The background is water and reeds out of focus.
I call this the good, the bad and the ugly, although none of them are actually ugly! They are just showing their normal goofy expressions.

A bird that is brown on its back and top of the wings, flies above the water in a wetland. The background is green reeds out of focus. It has a thin black collar that runs from eye to eye, below the chin, thus the name. The base of its short bill is red and its belly is white (unseen). We are looking at the bird from the side and above it.
For #WaderWednesday another Collared Pratincole as it sweeps through the wetlands, gulping down bugs. They must have left us on migration, as I haven't heard or seen them for a week.

A bird flying towards the viewer at an angle. It is slightly turned so the back and top of the wings are visible. Coloured a mottled brown with distinct white edge to the wing feathers, resulting in white stripe patterning across the brown wings. The end of the body, before the forked tail, is pure white. The background is the sweltering, clear, blue, Spanish sky.
One of the juvenile Collared Pratincoles flying around the lake, following the example set by the adults. Quick learners!

One of the distinctive features is the thin black collar that runs from eye to eye, underneath its neck. The patch inside the collar is a lighter brown. I enjoyed a few hours with Terns and these special Collared Pratincoles at #ElHondo this weekend. Also managed some pictures of the juveniles, without all their colors. This is one is an adult. #birds

I saw this massive moth at El Hondo Spain the other day. Turns out it is a Palm Moth - originally from Uruguay but accidentally released in Spain!! Not sure how? First I have ever seen. Very impressive. #moths #elhondo
