Limnellia surturi...a rather smart, rather little shore fly (Ephydridae) on sand outside a rabbit burrow at Cali Heath @yorkswildlife.bsky.social reserve yesterday. Looks to be a new VC record. #Ephydridae #shoreflies @dipteristsforum.bsky.social @ynuorg.bsky.social

Glenanthe sp. female from Hayling Island the other day. A very small saltmarsh #Ephydridae with distinctively 'upside down pear' shaped eyes. Likely G. ripicola but can't rule out G. fuscinervis without a male.

Setacera micans (Ephydridae) One of those where the scientific name works...'sparkling bristle-horn'. A very smart genus of shore flies found on damp areas of lowland heath locally in East Yorkshire. #ephydridae #ento @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

Here is one of my favorite flies (Diptera) from this year--An Ochthera sp. (Ephydridae) ONy recorded on iNaturalist in RI once before this summer, I found two and a third was found during an RINHS trip to Block Island. There is much to learn.

A face-on view of a specimen of the shorefly Paracoenia fumosa, with its rounded eyes and broad whitish face, covered in short bristles and showing the 'frog-face' that is typical of many shoreflies in family Ephydridae. From the Lincolnshire coast last June.

There have been several rather nice #Ephydridae shoreflies being shared for #FlyFriday so here's another - look out for the @dipteristsforum.bsky.social workshop next March at FSC Preston Montford, which will provide help getting to know this under-recorded family

Haven't posted here for a while so here's a very small #Ephydridae fly Hydrellia subalbiceps from a mire in the new forest. A frequent species in this sort of habitat but not often recorded. Larvae are unknown but will mine the leaves of one or more wetland plant species

Philotelma parvum seemingly new to Britain from Hatchet Pond in the New Forest last June. Just one specimen among many hundreds of similar looking flies which is apparently normal for species of this genus which occur at very low densities #Ephydridae
