For #flyfriday two crane flies (I think genus Tipula) on flowers. (Packera and Rhododendron).

Remember that these gentle giants arenโ€™t mosquitoes and they are harmless. If one gets in your house, just grab a leg and haul it outside.

Just in time for #flyfriday I saw this beauty on packera at Arabia Mt. #iNat cv suggests genus Empis, which is apparently a taxonomic challenge. Might be a species where the males bring courtship presents wrapped in silk, leading to their nickname โ€œballoon fliesโ€.

Monday was very confusing for me. It was Ground Hog's Day and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and yet I saw my first robin of Spring!?!

These two tried and true methods of prognostication seem to be at odds! Its almost as if there isn't any science behind them at all!

Crane fly (family Tipulidae) on a flower stem (April โ€˜22). One thing I love about crane flies is their (relatively) prominent halteres - the blobs on stems extending from the thorax, which flies evolved as they lost a pair of wings. #flyfriday #flyday #insects #bugsky #macro #diptera
