The first National Woman’s Day was held in the U.S. in 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America. Inspired by this, German activist Clara Zetkin proposed an international version, leading to the first official International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 19, 1911, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland—where over a million people joined rallies for women’s rights.

In 1913, Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day (IWD) on February 23, later standardized to March 8 on the Gregorian calendar. Since then, March 8 has remained the global date for IWD. In 1975, the United Nations officially recognized IWD, and in 1977, it proclaimed a global day for women’s rights and peace, allowing member states to observe it according to their national traditions.
