Smoked bream.

Smoked bream.

Many Cyprinidae species are very abundant. Fishing them for sustenance removes excess nutrients from the ecosystem. Sometimes they eat insects from the surface, just like grayling and trout. Tasty when smoked.

These will be the winners when the waters warm.

(Possible) Dream Job Alert: Cortland Line Is Hiring In addition to real estate listings, I also look at job boards for "dream jobs" that involve fly fishing. My job can be stressful, but I like it. However, it's unfortunately far away from trout water. Indeed had a job posting that popped up over the weekend that wasn't a guide job, rather a supply chain listing for Cortland Line…

I know there are many beautiful creeks for fly fishing, but this one is the most relaxing for me 😊

Reading The Water: Form and Content in Fishing and Poetry Not long ago I hiked down a gameland trail into a gorge thick with hemlock and rhododendron to look for a small creek named Devil’s Hole. The name comes from the way the creek emerges through rocks…

Trout season opened this weekend. I didn't go, but here's an essay on #flyfishing and #poetry. uniambic.com/2025/11/08/r...

Every angler, hunter, outdoorsman, hiker and conservationist who voted for Trump owns this. The destruction of public lands and with it, the access to wildlands that is our birthright. #flyfishing

A clear river bends through a tight, forested corridor, its surface shifting from shallow, sunlit ripples in the foreground to a deeper, darker pool beneath a rock wall. The near bank is strewn with rounded, gray and tan boulders—some the size of chairs—worn smooth by years of current and seasonal floods. Between them, small green shrubs and saplings push up, their leaves bright and reflective in direct light.

The water closest to the viewer is thin and fast, slipping over stones in narrow channels that glint gold and white where sunlight strikes. As it moves toward the center of the frame, it gathers into a still basin, turning a deep green with hints of blue, its surface calmer and more reflective.

Across the river, a layered rock face rises a few meters above the waterline. The stone is fractured and horizontal, with ledges and seams that catch shadow, giving it a banded appearance. Patches of moss and low vegetation cling to the cracks, softening the edges of the cliff.

Above the rock, the forest thickens immediately. Conifer trees—tall and closely spaced—fill the background, their trunks mostly hidden by dense foliage. The canopy filters the sunlight, creating a muted, greenish haze that settles over the scene. On the right side, a large evergreen branch extends into the frame, its needles sharply lit and detailed against the darker woods behind it.

Near the left edge of the river, partially in shadow, a person lies stretched out on a rock at the water’s edge, still and low against the stone, adding a sense of scale to the height of the trees and the breadth of the pool.

The overall scene is cool-toned and shaded despite the sunlight, with the soundless suggestion of moving water, filtered light, and the dense, enclosing presence of forest on all sides.🙏

Opening Day of PA Trout Season 🤩

It’s two fold…not only can I bring home fresh trout for dinner, but more importantly, I get to fish my home creeks instead of making the long drive 😊

Wanna Buy a Bonefish Flat? Only $49.5 Million, No Big Deal You know the drill by now. First it was a Scottish salmon river, then a Catskills trout headquarters, even a tiny chunk of Wisconsin Driftless. it's fun to daydream about owning fishing real estate. Yesterday, Gray's Sporting Journal sent an email blast out with something extremely daydream worthy: The Salinas. Located on the southern tip of Long Island in the Bahamas, not the one with the traffic and the strip malls, the one surrounded by turquoise water.

A creek flow through in the woods
On a cloudy morning Because of the recent rain, the water is muddy and higher than usual. There is a small grassy island where a goose is warming her eggs.

Crum Creek, PA

I prefer the upper section of this creek for better water, but public access is limited 😞
This area looks more open, I should start checking it out 🤔

Lots of tick activity, though 😞 I have DEET in my car always ready 🙂

Nikko Headwaters Report – Spring Comes Slowly A week into the season, the crowds that descended on Nikko's streams for opening day have thinned out. Guide Takashi and a visiting angler from Australia made their way into the headwaters. The fishing was difficult, with a single rainbow trout landed, and a reminder that early season in the mountains asks for patience. The headwaters sit at elevation where spring arrives slowly.

I’ve been exclusively fly fishing for a few years now but never been interested in tying my own flies. Having gear fished my whole life, I just buy what I need. Welp, I tried it. It ain’t pretty, but it’s mine. And I immediately understand why it’s fun. #flyfishing #flytying #pnw #bluesky

Spending more time at the fly tying bench these days makes me realize just how much I enjoy fly tying and playing around with patterns, materials, and hooks.

How about you? Do you find more inspiration at certain times of the year??

The White Marabou Muddler.

The stuff that happened on this river is out of the scope of my experience in #FlyFishing for three decades. I'm not giving it any justice by explanation - only to say that protect the natural forests, restore the rivers and do not overconsume, only because everyone else does

Box of Rain – A Fly Fishing Substack Worth Your Time I spend a decent amount of time crawling around the corners of the internet looking for fly fishing content worth sharing, and every now and then something lands in my feed that really draws me down a rabbit hole. Box of Rain, a Substack from someone who goes by CosmicJohn, was one of those finds, and has become a favorite read over the past year.
