“….. These are the guys who can’t feel their fly bouncing off of the river bottom, can’t notice the smolts pecking at their fly, and can’t tell when they’ve had a legitimate steelhead GRAB that would have deserved another several casts.”

A creek flows through the woods under a blue sky. The trees are still bare, but the banks glow with vibrant green grass. The water mirrors the sky and branches, while two geese dip their heads in perfect synchrony, tails lifted skyward.

A Ponderosa pine rises directly out of a tilted slab of exposed rock, its trunk anchored not in soil but in fractures—thin seams where time has opened just enough space for roots to press in and hold. The rock surface is hard, layered, and weathered, slanting downslope like a frozen wave. What little soil exists has long since washed away, leaving only grit and shallow pockets of dust.

At the base, the roots are exposed, gripping the stone like fingers. They follow cracks and edges, flattening where they must, thickening where they can, widening their hold against gravity and wind. There is no depth here—only attachment.

The trunk grows upward from this precarious footing, straight at first, then subtly irregular, shaped by years of wind exposure. Its bark is plated and furrowed, darker in this light, with rough, vertical ridges that catch shadow. Branches extend unevenly, some reaching outward into open air, others shortened or broken, likely lost to storms or stress. The crown is sparse compared to trees in deeper soil, its needles gathered in tufts at the ends of limbs, leaving much of the structure visible.

Around it, a few other pines occupy similar positions, each spaced apart, each claiming its own fracture in the rock. The slope is quiet and largely bare—no dense understory, no grasses of consequence—just stone, scattered debris, and the occasional fallen limb.

Above, the sky is uniform and pale, offering no warmth in the scene. The light is flat, emphasizing texture over color: the grain of the rock, the roughness of bark, the fine structure of needles.

This tree is not thriving in the conventional sense. It is holding. Growing slowly, persistently, within narrow limits set by the rock beneath it. Every part of its form reflects that constraint—roots exposed, crown reduced, structure hardened by years of minimal water, shallow anchorage, and constant exposure.

It remains not because conditions are favorable, but because it has adapted to endure them.

Nikko Streams Open: First Tenkara Report of the Season The wait is over. Fishing on the mountain streams of Nikko officially opened on March 21st, and tenkara angler Takashi Sakauchi wasted no time heading to a nearby stream on opening day to see what the season had in store. The early results were modest but promising: several yamame (cherry salmon) measuring around 15 cm, caught on tenkara in classic fashion.

A creek flows through the woods. The far bank is hilly, filled with bare trees beneath a partly cloudy evening sky. The area is still bright, and a shallow creek runs along the hills.

Not new to this creek but still learning it😊
Fishing opens in 10 days, just scouting spots on an evening walk😉
With my son in a new club this season (fields nearby), this might become my go-to🤔

Apparently there's a television show called 'The Madison' that came out recently. Why watch the beauty of #Montana's #TroutCountry on TV? Come to #BigSkyCountry and do some #flyfishing on the real thing. Of course, come as a respectful tourist and go back with a souvenir from #MontanaTreasures.

The Tenkara Rod Co. Anytimer Kickstarter If you've been following Tenkara Rod Co. on social media, you may have already seen the buzz around their latest Kickstarter campaign. Following up last year's successful Backpackr campaign, the Idaho-based tenkara company is back with their 10th Kickstarter project. It's called the Anytimer, and the pitch is pretty straightforward: a fully functional 10-foot tenkara rod that collapses down to just 12 inches and weighs 1.8 oz.

Sanders Spider Flies Article by Sander van Dijk Here's a fly pattern that's as fun to tie as it is to fish and is surprisingly effective. The inspiration? Look no further than what's already happening right at the water's surface. Spiders are everywhere near water. They live in it, skate across it, and tumble onto it. That natural presence makes them an irresistible target for fish, and the Sanders Spider is designed to imitate just that.

Enjoyed some disc golfing in the woods along this creek instead of fishing. Nice weather for disc golfing 😊 Also, still no leaves and thick bushes, so easy to find the discs😏
