Threatened bird species' nesting site devastated in WA's South West Conservationists say a threatened fairy tern population at a nesting site in WA's South West has been "almost wiped out" halfway through breeding season.

The nesting area of a #FairyTern "super colony" has been devastated in WA's South West almost halfway through the threatened species' breeding season. Human, dog, and cat footprints were seen in the protected breeding area alongside crushed eggs and dead chicks.

In April, experts from VIC, SA and WA came together (via Zoom – still distancing!) to discuss #FairyTern #conservation and the breeding season outcomes. A highlight from VIC: the 2019/20 was the most successful breeding season within Western Port over the last 40 years!

A colony of 63 #FairyTern adults nested at a remote location on #PhillipIsland resulting in 47 fledglings. @PhillipIslandNP’s rangers managed and monitored the colony, giving these #birds the best chance. This is an incredible #conservation result for Fairy Terns in Victoria!

Trained volunteers & @BirdlifeOz staff monitored the Bird Island #FairyTern colony this season with funding from @AdelaideNRM.

Fairy’s take flight!
Five #FairyTern fledglings took to the sky from this seasons’ colony on Bird Island, Outer Harbour in South Australia. A small number, but still a #conservation triumph as Fairy Terns face many challenges and are an #EndangeredSpecies in SA.

3/10 team have been working closely with @envirogov reps to update the #HoodedPlover & #FairyTern Conservation Advice. The future goal is to develop a National #BeachNestingBirds Conservation Action Plan to guide priority actions to tackle threats to these birds.
