1 #ISTC20 Low reproductive success threatens long-term viability of many #shorebird populations. Hooded Plovers (aka hoodies) are highly threatened #BeachNestingBirds along AUS southern coast and impacted by threats like human disturbance and introduced & superabundant predators.
Beach bums!
Most plovers worldwide are synonymous with beachfront, coastal or wetland environments. Take our #beachnestingbirds, all they want is to hang out on the beach & live peacefully without disturbance. Who can’t relate?

Red-capped Plover – Small & active, the most common and widespread of Australia’s #beachnestingbirds. Found in a variety of fresh and salt-water habitats all across AUS. ♂️ with bold rufous-coloured cap which give them their name.

Hooded Plover - The poster child for Australia’s threatened #BeachNestingBirds. Found on sandy beaches across southern AUS, hoodies breed over spring & summer, when everyone goes to the beach. Very vulnerable to human disturbance.

Never too late to celebrate our #WomenInScience!
We're so proud that the 85% of @BirdlifeOz's Coastal Birds team are women, including our program leader, @GrainneMaguire7. And there is more! The 75% of our regional #BeachNestingBirds volunteer groups are yet coordinated by women!
In the workshop, ~20 kids learned about our resident #BeachNestingBirds, migratory #shorebirds and woodland #birds, the challenges they face and how to monitor them! Our young Bird Ambassadors also provided great ideas to bring positive change in the #community! #KidsAreAlright
Wanna know your #shorebirds? Come along to the @BirdlifeOz Migratory Shorebird team's identification workshops at Port Albert (Feb 28) & Inverloch (March 2). Bonus: at Port Albert you'll also learn about our resident #BeachNestingBirds 😊

The long weekend is here! Remember we're sharing the shore with #threatened #BeachNestingBirds. There might be eggs or #HoodedPlover chicks around. Stick to the water edge, keep your dog on the leash, give birds space and enjoy the beach!
#ThinkBeachBirds #MindTheHoodies
Not always on the beach! One of our #BeachNestingBirds can also nest on the shores of inland wetlands and lakes all over Australia. Do you know which species? Clue: It's our smallest resident #shorebird.

🚨CHICKS ON THE BEACH🚨If you see #HoodedPlover chicks on the beach, they're not abandoned nor orphan! Like other #BeachNestingBirds, hoodie chicks start feeding themselves immediately after hatching, while being closely watched by their parents. #ThinkBeachBirds #MindTheHoodies
When photographing #BeachNestingBirds, remember these are extremely vulnerable to disturbance and be aware of your impact! Follow Mark Lethlean tips in our Winter 2019 newsletter to "tread lightly and cause no harm". 👉

9/10 @AdelaideNRM funded new research to investigate the effectiveness of volunteer training. The study aims to assess the learning experience of volunteers attending migratory #shorebird training course and #BeachNestingBirds workshops. Results coming up soon! Stay tuned!
3/10 team have been working closely with @envirogov reps to update the #HoodedPlover & #FairyTern Conservation Advice. The future goal is to develop a National #BeachNestingBirds Conservation Action Plan to guide priority actions to tackle threats to these birds.
Time to reflect on the year with 10 @birdlife_hoodie highlights from 2019! It’s been a busy year full of new & exciting initiatives! We’d like to thank all the hard work that our partners and volunteers continue to invest to protect our #BeachNestingBirds!
