Really excited that the #GalbatrossProject was featured in a recent BBC The Documentary podcast! Hear their experiences searching for female birds during the 2025 #FemaleBirdDay, where they boldly found 38 species ♀️🐦 www.bbc.com/audio/play/p...
A female cardinal perched among dark green leaves, wet after recent rain
For day 3 of #FemaleBirdDay, here's a northern cardinal. A pair of cardinals are regular visitors to our bird feeder; we call them Cardi A and Cardi B.

Another of my many favourites, from my archive, for #FemaleBirdDay, a female Wood Duck. #birds #birdphotography

To celebrate #FemaleBirdDay, a beautiful #female Northern Shoveler! #birds #birdphotography
A female white-collared manakin, with predominantly green and yellow coloration, sits on a branch in dappled sunlight amid green foliage.
For day 2 of #FemaleBirdDay, here's a white-collared manakin. Only the male has the white collar that gives the species its name; the female's green feathers allow her to blend perfectly into her rainforest surroundings.

For those wondering about #FemaleBirdDay and the reasons behind it, the RT post below can shed some light 🪶 Also, for illustration, my photo of a female indigo bunting and the pictures that come up when you google that species. Usually, just the male. #birding
A female Purple Finch on the Bruce Peninsula, Ontario in spring.

She is swimming on a blue pond and although her body is in profile her head is turned toward face the observer. Two feathers are dramatically out of place and curl up to almost touch her head. She’s giving off a strong “I’m too sexy for this pond” vibe.
Female Wilson’s Phalarope caught doing a bit of preening for #FemaleBirdDay. Females are more vibrant than males and engage in polyandry; males stay with the nest to incubate the eggs. Rock on, Sisters! 🪶 #ArizonaBirding
Today is #FemaleBirdDay, so here's a lovely lady taking a break in a plant where she'd been feeding off the flowers 🪶

A female resplendent quetzal perches on a branch amid green leaves. Her green head and wing feathers blend in with the foliage behind, while the red lower belly and black-and-white tail bars stand out.
For #FemaleBirdDay, here's a resplendent #quetzal I met in #CostaRica, with other birders who asked "where's your boyfriend?" The male is striking, but the female is stunning in her own right, with brilliant green, black, white, and red feathers.

The first paper of your PhD is always so exciting! 🤩 An all-#Galbatross effort, "A focus on females can improve science and conservation!" See press release (www.audubon.org/news/researc...) and the study here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...! #FemaleBirds #FemaleBirdDay
In the wake of #FemaleBirdDay, here's a Margaret's Batis and a small thread on 'female' bird names. 🧵 1/11 https://femalebirdday.wordpress.com/
There was some discussion last #femalebirdday about bird species named (in English) for traits found only in the female. Very few suggestions came in. Chin-spot batis was one, but I don't think anyone mentioned the Chestnut Wattle-eye. Behold - here is the male I saw yesterday.
We had a wonderful day of #birding today, and one of my favourite moments was having lunch by the side of a small lake while this female Black-throated Green Warbler hungout nearby. She even flew right between us at one point! Great bird for #FemaleBirdDay
To celebrate the first ever #FemaleBirdDay here are 3 Neotropical species that you only ever see photographed as males (and for which the English names don't even apply to females!). What are they?...
