What are your #FestiveTraditions? Do you sing carols like the nurses in this picture from Whipps Cross? Do you bring in the Yule Log every year, like these nursing students?

Christmas eve was ushered in by the crew with much rejoicing: they had formed their mess tables and arranged them on each side of the lower deck, with a president & vice at the top and bottom of each, vying with each other in producing the best song and toast. It afforded us infinite pleasure to find so many men thus situated, enjoying themselves with the greatest harmony and good humour. The following being the “day of days”. Christmas was commenced by the performance of divine service, with an appropriate sermon from our Revd. Chaplain; and a small addition made to the rations, that the people may partake of as good a dinner as the means at Command.
The luxuries consisted of a joint of English Roast Beef, Venison, and Plum Puddings, the former of that had been preserved frozen since 1st July last year. Also a tin Case of preserved Potatoes, all of which proved exceedingly good.
In the early part of the day, a circumstance took place, which for want of a subject may not be considered out of place to relate: being a very ancient custom still followed up in H.M. Navy.

A Victorian Christmas card with illustration of a young girl with blonde hair sleeping in a brass bed covered in a pink blanket. The bed sits on a multicoloured rug. At the end of the bed is a draped a very large white and blue stripped stocking. Written in the right-hand corner of the bed is the words “Hold to the light, and then you’ll find the stocking filled with toys of every kind.”

Sound asleep and dreaming of Christmas magic… Judging by the size of that stocking, someone had a very long wish list! 🎄

Black and white photograph of Prince and Princess Henry of Prussia and their children in a formal group. From left to right: Prince Waldemar (seated), Princess Irène (standing), Prince Henry (seated, with little Prince Henry on his lap) and Prince Sigismund (standing, dressed in a sailor suit). Princess Irène is wearing a light-coloured dress or blouse with ruffles and lacy sleeves while her husband is in the uniform of an admiral. Little Prince Henry is dressed in a frock with a scalloped hem, strap shoes and white socks. There is a fireplace and a door in the background.

The photograph is attached to a Christmas card which has been signed by Princess Henry. She has also written "In remembrance of Kiel on these days". The front of the card bears the embossed image of a sailing ship and the words "Viel Glück zum Weinacht und Neujahr!" Princess Henry has added the dates 1902 and 1903.

Sending photographs to loved ones at Christmas time has always been popular and there are some fine early examples in the Special Collections at the University of Southampton

Who has started the annual tradition of prepping for Christmas Dinner yet?

Here's an article from our archive of Newcastle's student newspaper The Courier from December 2011, giving readers advice on the 'perfect' ingredients for the annual meal.

I haven't done any writing today, but I have visited two friends for coffee and swapping of gifts, cleaned the kitchen and marzipanned the Christmas cake. I've made some festive marzipan shapes with the leftovers for my sister because she loves marzipan! #festivetraditions #feelingfestive

One of our favorite #FestiveTraditions is decorating. We love these bilingual banners from the Santee Normal Training School in #Nebraska. The students at Santee received instruction in both Dakota and English, a rarity at the time (late 1800s). #ArchiveAdventCalendar #Christmas
