Allied Forces, led by U.S. General Dwight Eisenhower, did not intend to liberate Paris at this point in the war. Instead, the Allies wanted to destroy the Germans’ ability to fight. And there were other concerns: Hitler had ordered his troops to destroy the city if it was attacked by the Allies. And there were fears of urban warfare akin to the horrors of the Battle of Leningrad and the Siege of Stalingrad. This type of combat would almost certainly require more than 3,000 tons of food each day to maintain the French population of Paris and rebuilding would take decades and cost billions.
The French General Charles de Gaulle heard that resistance fighters had begun engaging Nazi troops. His fear that Parisians would be annihilated – just as the Nazis had slaughtered the people of Warsaw, Poland – led him to tell Allied leaders that he was prepared to divert his troops and tanks to liberate Paris on his own.
Over the next few days, the people of Paris organized and in skirmishes throughout the city, fought the Nazis. The Allies rolled into the city on August 24th and the German occupation forces in Paris surrendered the next day.

The picture shows a scene in the city center as Allied forces entered Paris. People began filling the square as word spread of the arrival of liberating forces. This photo was taken as a German sniper began shooting at the people below and they scattered to take cover.

On this day, in 1944, the liberation of Paris began. The city had been occupied by Nazi forces for four years. Members of the French Resistance initiated combat against the Germans.

"The amazing thing about Humphrey Bogart was, he was probably uglier than all the guys at the new style Joe and Juice yet still managed to make you feel genetically inferior. His was an ugliness that emanated gravitas."
