1: THE ZONE OF INTEREST dir: Jonathan Glazer
Explores the old cliché about the banality of evil with chilling efficiency. The horrors of the Holocaust are never seen, only heard in some of the best sound design I've experienced.
My last 2024 video on @brwcheese.bsky.social Youtube channel has just gone up! www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XMR... #movie #film #reaction #review #youtube #filmsof2024 #thesubstance #marvel #sonic3

2: ODDITY dir: Damian McCarthy
Lots of (great) 2024 horror films had a lot of very important things to say, but my favourite horror film of the year was content with just making you shit yourself repeatedly. Coming after CAVEAT, this proves that McCarthy is a real horror talent.
Also last night I watched STRANGE DARLINGS
I didn’t think another film could make it into my top 10 of 2024 but that’s just made the cut so somethings gotta go now! #StrangeDarlings #Filmsof2024

3: I SAW THE TV GLOW dir: Jane Schoenbrun
A gorgeous, haunting and moving film about being true to yourself and the perils of not doing so, along with pitfalls of nostalgia. Pretty much unlike anything else and a massive step up from Schoenbrun's last film. Great soundtrack too.

4: POOR THINGS dir: Yorgos Lanthimos
A surrealist steampunk fantasy with a (probably) career defining performance from Emma Stone. Darkly comedic, visually stunning and packing an emotional punch without being as bleak as Lanthimos's other work.
#FilmsOf2024
6: THE WAILING dir: Pedro Martín-Calero
A Spanish language horror film about a viral curse with background scares, it may as well have been made for me. It's also about violence against women and how they aren't believed when they report it. Terrifying and horribly timely.

8: IN A VIOLENT NATURE dir: Chris Nash
Slashers have been around for at least 50 years, so making an original one now is difficult, but Nash manages it with his (mostly) POV splatter-fest that sticks with the supernatural killer at the film's core.

9: TIMESTALKER dir: Alice Lowe
Hilarious time-skipping anti-romantic comedy. Surreal touches and laugh out loud moments abound. Unlike anything else I've every seen.

10: KINDS OF KINDNESS dir: Yorgos Lanthimos
Evil Yorgos returns with the bleakest, darkest comedy possible. An anthology showing the lengths we will go to in order to please other people, brilliantly performed by his ensemble cast.

11. THE RULE OF JENNY PEN dir: James Ashcroft
Bleak New Zealand nursing home nightmare with veins of very dark humour. Carried by three towering performances from Geoffrey Rush, Nathaniel Lees and especially a terrifying John Lithgow.
#FilmsOf2024
12: LOVE LIES BLEEDING dir: Rose Glass
Glass follows up one of the most upsetting horror films of recent years with a 80s set LGBTQIA+ romantic bodybuilding noir thriller. Brilliant performances abound, there's bags of style and the tone is perfectly pitched.

13: PATER NOSTER AND THE MISSION OF LIGHT dir: @smashism.bsky.social
Trippy, gory and hilarious hippiesploitation grindhouse throwback about the lengths some of us will go to in order to obtain obscure records. Made for the price of a second-hand car, doesn't feel or look like it.

14: SMILE 2 dir: Parker Finn
A surprisingly great sequel that outdoes the original in terms of scares, characters and overall unpleasantness. Occasionally goes to cheap jump scare territory, but also does escalating dread extremely well. Naomi Scott is amazing throughout.
#FilmsOf2024
15: CHIME dir: Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Japanese horror genius Kurosawa returns with a dread inducing short. A slow burn despite the 45-minute runtime, but genuinely terrifying because of it. Shame about the stupid NFT-style release it had though
#FilmsOf2024
16: HERETIC dir: Scott Beck/Bryan Woods
Sharply written and full of genuine tension, with three great central performances. Hugh Grant is the MVP though, fully leaning into his new villain era.
#FilmsOf2024
17: THE FIRST OMEN dir: Arkasha Stevenson
Unexpectedly great prequel with a fully committed performance by Nell Tiger Free. Has some great creepy moments and plenty to say about bodily autonomy and religion too.
#FilmsOf2024
18: MAXXXINE dir: Ti West
The third-best film of the trilogy, but still a fun time. It certainly has the best soundtrack of the year (that "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" scene though), bags of giallo style and references to 80s horror and thrillers.
#FilmsOf2024
19: DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE dir: Shawn Levy
Probably the most fun I had in the cinema. There's more invention gone into the swearing in this film than in the last 5 years of the MCU. Jackman still manages to bring some pathos too.
#FilmsOf2024
20: THE LONELY MAN WITH THE GHOST MACHINE dir: @grahamskipper.bsky.social
Bleak and existential, it may be set after the apocalypse but is really about a break-up (which can feel like the end of the world sometimes anyway). Skipper is great in front of and behind the camera.
To the delight of no-one but me, I'm going to list my top 20 films of the year over the next few days. I know there are 10 days of 2024 left, but the likelihood of me seeing any new films before the end of the year is slim.
All based on UK release dates or festival viewings.
