Looking like 5 miles of bad road, for a House Finch, this male is caught looking over the edge of the concrete block he's standing on so it looks like he's having a rather depressing day...

Spring vibes. Two vibrantly red-headed male House Finches hanging out together in the budding Ocotillo, singing for any hot lady finches...'how you doin'?'
In western lands beneath the Sun
The flowers may rise in Spring,
The trees may bud, the waters run,
The merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night,
And swaying branches bear
The Elven-stars as jewels white
Amid their branching hair.

Just in time for #FinchyFriday. A pair of house finches visited the feeder cam today.
Spoiler alert: The female pops in at the end. πͺΆ #BackyardBirding
πΈ House finch: Haemorhous mexicanus
Three house finches perch in a bare tree, a pair together in the midground and a solo male in the foreground looking larger than life. The scene is heavily backlit and slightly overexposed.
Some (unedited) atmosphere for #FinchyFriday #birds
A male House finch with his dark red head, brown body, and brown stripes on his buff belly, faces left while using his claws on his left leg to hold on to food he's trying to eat.
#FinchyFriday and our birds don't know how to act. Yesterday's high temperature was 65Β°F; today's was 78Β°F. And this weekend's high temps will be back in the mid-60's. I'm just as confused as the #birds are. πͺΆ

After ignoring the finch feeder for weeks, a House Finch decided it was a good place to perch and snack all day. #FinchyFriday πͺΆ

πΈ House finch: Haemorhous mexicanus
Four photos are of different house finches stoping by the top of a cage feeder. They are brown and cream patterned and the male has a redish head and chest
House Finches were stopping by the feeder top to visit, then left without a snack. #FinchyFriday
A male House Finch in profile is a rosy red and brown bird with a short, thick, conical bill. Its head, throat, and chest are primarily rosy red, while the back, belly, and flanks are streaky brown, with the red color intensity varying based on diet. This one's been eating his Wheaties, posed contemplating on a slanted branch with long green pine needles in bokeh for the background. Artsy, and a new edit of a finch fav...fitting, for a final finchy Friday for a few. Feeling Fall is finally around the corner...

Blazing sunlight means blazingly backlit borbs...like this male House Finch in profile looking over his shoulder at me like 'you know I'm backlit af, don't even try it...' while perched on the bar thingy that holds our seed feeder below. Now, the controversy: I shared this as a male House Finch, because that's what I think he is now, however I just found him hiding in my Cassin's Finch file (maybe I thought he was fat at the time? idk...) but of course, I'm doubting myself. So I Googled him. And the search says House as the first result, but the AI says Cassin's. I just don't think his crown is 'jacked' enough to be a Cassin's. So I'd rather chance posting him as a House Finch and be wrong, than posting him as a Cassin's and be right. Does that make sense? Ymmv. ;~p Blame the Madman OG.

Adult male Cassin's Finches are characterized by rosy pink plumage, with the brightest red on the crown. I also say they are 'chubbier' looking than House Finches, but I'm not body shaming. This one is in the dappled light under the canopy with his crown up and some light shining right on his eyeball.
πΈ Cassin's Finches are medium-sized finches with a penchant for high-elevation coniferous forests. π² The male has a pale eye ring, a bright red crown and a rosy-pink chest, with dark streaks on its back.

What a sweetheart! But darn it! I can rarely tell the young house & purple finches apart. #FinchyFriday
The finches spend lots of time at the back corner feeder next to an overgrown corner of fire spike & a yaupon holly. Oh who am I kidding? They clean out all the feeders every single day.#birds πͺΆ
A very nice portrait of a male House Finch but I really lucked out with his posture because the way he's leaning shows you his beautifully colored RUMP. And you know how I like a nice rump.
πͺΆπMale House Finches commonly display a red or reddish-orange RUMP, along with red on their heads & breasts. The intensity of the red color can vary due to diet, with some males exhibiting orange or even yellow hues instead.

The finch has made it to her perch on the tube feeder, and has a safflower seed in her beak
The finch, still at her perch and with a fresh seed in her beak, turns to side eye the camera.
A big round of applause for THE BRAVEST FINCH who came down from the tree to circle and make several last-second aborted landings at the feeder before summoning the courage to land while I was at the door. π₯² She didn't even flinch when I (albeit verrrry carefully) shut the door. #FinchyFriday #birds
A very round Christmas-tree-ornament of a bird, er...a real male House Finch is being borby perched on a bare branch in a tree covered in fresh snowfall. His lady is out of focus behind him and stayed that way...
...since I zoomed in for a better look at Mr. red-on-the-head House Finch with that snowy composition filling out the frame. You feel cooler already.

A borby and vibrant male House Finch, and the frame, are half and half in light and shadow as the Finch revels in the flavor of my secret-formula suet as evidenced by the remnants stuck on his bill. Female house finches generally choose their mates based on plumage coloration, preferring males with brighter red coloration. This preference is linked to the availability of carotenoid pigments in the male's diet, which directly influences the intensity of his red plumage. Females appear to gain resource benefits by choosing colorful males, including greater nest attentiveness from the male. I mention all that because I'm going to show you this particular male's choosy lady next... since they visited me together.
To find a balance of Yin and Yang is to discover the secret to a fulfilled life.

If you've followed for long enough, you know I had THE sweetheart setup for a birding spot at the last house. Well, this may grow into my new sweet spot, the evil genius here is I don't even have to move from my desk. (*maniacal cackling) Pictured is the male House Finch that will forever be known in my heart as the first bird to pose for me in this sapling we planted outside my 9-5 window. Hopefully the first of many birb friends...
