Flooded boat on Greenisland beach. Technically the Council should remove this, as it is moored without permission. However, it'll likely be irreparably damaged soon if it isn't drained and refloated and taken on land for repairs...

Nice low tide tomorrow at around 09:30 - sounds like a little trespass is in order down to the #ForbiddenBeach at #Greenisland. Sure come on down - it'll be lovely! @meabc.bsky.social won't mind.

Down on part of the #ForbiddenBeach- even the beach wants people to be able to come here!

A windswept beagle on the Forbidden Beach at Greenisland. The sand is wet, the sky is blue, and there are some houses in the background. This is the beach beside Belfast Lough that local residents have been trying to get access to for YEARS, yet we still don't have a safe, accessible, permanent of-right way of getting down there without having to travel long distances at very low tide. We want Mid and East Antrim Council to work with Northern Ireland Water to get the gate open and let families and doggoes have fun on this lovely tidal beach - mental and physical health, the joy of the great outdoors!

In the middle of the hurly burly, our Council @meabc.bsky.social just voted to launch a consultation to gauge the appetite for access to the #ForbiddenBeach, which remains scandalously closed off to local people unless they are prepared to trespass. Let's open this up and #ShareTheShore! #ALT

#GiroDItalia was amazing. NI needs more of this. Our whole road (which was a main road at the time, now happily bypassed) came out to watch them. Fantastic community spirit - and it's when many of us discovered the (very nearby) #ForbiddenBeach that NI Water had closed off to us! #ShareTheShore

> CLIMB GATE

You scramble over the gate and find yourself:
On the Forbidden Beach.

The sun is rising slowly on the eastern horizon, casting long shadows of rocks on the wave-washed sand.

An adorable beagle wanders towards you, safely on her lead.

Charlee Beagle stays on the lead, even on the #ForbiddenBeach that NI Water refuse to let the plebs access...

Tide too high for the #ForbiddenBeach this morning, but warm and sunny down at Torytown.

You are standing on a beautiful safe beach at low tide. To the North you can see the tiny Green Island that gives #Greenisland its name. You can see a mooring buoy attached to a rope. Sea-birds roost and feed here, and you've just seen a huge heron glide languidly by. Seals loll on the distant rocks.

You feel a paradoxical sense of freedom - paradoxical because you've only been able to get here by trespassing on private land owned by Northern Ireland Water, and for some reason they don't want to open their gate and let residents access the shore. Poor form, you think. You'd be right.

You recall that neighbours have been campaigning for years for NI Water to #ShareTheShore and allow people access to the beach. Despite setbacks and some frankly jobsworthy rebuffs, local residents are determined to fight on and ensure that *our* beach is accessible to the elderly, disabled, children, people walking dogs, just normal people wanting to access the foreshore for recreation, exercise, leisure and to keep it clean - as is their right. Several councillors have been helping residents in their noble quest, and the community is very grateful. But we won't rest until we have won, and we have safe permanent access to this important part of our environment.

The beach continues north-east and south-west. If you're lucky, the tides will be low enough to allow you to escape if you travel a kilometer in either direction, but apart from that, the beach remains forbidden - Greenisland's best kept secret (and that there actually is a Green Island).

Earlier today down on the #ForbiddenBeach at #Greenisland - absolutely lovely at low tide. Yes, the beagle and I had to "trespass" on NI Water property to get there, and climb a scary gate, but it's so worth it. Read the ALT for more juicy details! #ReadTheALT and #ShareTheShore!

Post image You find yourself transported to a wet and windy beach at low tide. OK, not quite transported - you had to climb a gate and engage in a little trespass to get here - it's not called the Forbidden Beach for nothing, you know! The sand is damp and so are you. Waves from Belfast Lough wash against the sand. But it's beautiful, serene and exhilarating at the same time. The beach stretches north-east towards Carrick and south-west towards Whiteabbey.

You can see a beagle at the end of a lead.
