American artist Frederic Edwin Church was primarily a landscape painter, but this portrait is steeped in art deco 1920s vibes. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Church was a central figure in the “Hudson River School” of American landscape painters, best known for painting large landscapes, often depicting mountains, waterfalls, and sunsets.

Church's paintings put an emphasis on realistic detail, dramatic light, and panoramic views. In his prime, he was one of the most famous painters in the United States.

"Lady in Charlotte's Dress" is the title the Church family has always used for this painting. However, it is thought to have been exhibited at Allied Artists of America as either “Sondra” in 1928 or “Madame Z.” in 1932. Charlotte was Church’s eldest daughter and it is assumed the dress is one of hers.

For portraits, Church was known to use Japanese print gold backdrops to ground his subjects in the Japanese art influence sweeping American in the early 20th century. A large, stylized white crane with black wingtips is positioned behind the woman with its wings partly spread as if in flight — in a decorative style appearing almost ethereal.

The young woman has a tight bobbed hairstyle typical of the 1920s, and wears large, dangling gold earrings. Her sleeveless dress is a vibrant, burnt orange color, with arm overlays of gold and light orange lace. The dress has a peplum ruffled waistline and matching lace skirt. Her pose is somewhat theatrical, with her hands clasped on her left hip as she looks up to her right (our left) with a focused expression.

Church utilizes soft blending and muted background colors to focus attention on the bright orange dress and the woman's form. The lines are fluid, suggesting elegance and a degree of softness, despite the geometric influences visible in the hair and dress shapes. The overall effect is one of sophisticated beauty with a touch of symbolism as the crane suggests themes of grace or freedom.

This is a great time of year to come visit at Olana (Olana.org) - the sun is shining on the snow outside, illuminating the paintings inside the #MainHouse, better than it was in #FredericEdwinChurch ‘s day.
