If we want classrooms where students can debate, dissent, and think freely without fear, we cannot assume the right content will do the work for us; it is the practiced judgment of the skilled teacher that makes democratic learning possible.

In 1964, #Mississippi had the lowest #VoterRegistration rate for Black Americans in the U.S., and white supremacists used violence to maintain that.

A few days before the murders, Klan members went to the small Mississippi town of Philadelphia and beat congregants before setting fire to their church. Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner, were effective organizers who had helped many Black people register to vote. They heard about the attack in the town of Philadelphia and drove there to talk with community members. Afterward, Klan members arranged for police to stop Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner’s car. It was the last time they were seen alive. The FBI was put in charge of the investigation and – because of the church arson and after finding the civil rights workers’ car had also been set on fire – the FBI named this case Mississippi Burning.

‘You must know this story’: Why Freedom Summer’s murders matter today During the 1964 effort to register Black Mississippians to vote, the Klan killed three civil rights activists. The atrocity still reveberates.

We all need to know this American History. [Gifted w. my subscription to The Washington Post]: In 1964, the Klan killed three young activists and shocked the nation
