Linklater is basically cosplaying the masters, but clearly isn’t being serious or reverent with Nouvelle Vague either, which is part of the fun. Safe yet enjoyable irony, that plays up the pompous absurdity of Godard as much as it loves filmmaking as a sincere excuse to hang out.
The French film festival still on at various venues around the UK until December 14th. Check out the programme at frenchfilmfestival.org.uk #FrenchFilmFestival #film #France #London #UK

Love can only last so long, self-healing can only take us so far, sacrifice is a painful mess. Krieps may usually be a heaven-sent presence, but is something else in Love Me Tender; an arresting, brutal, devastating series of moments that are so precious yet can only be fleeting.

Even at a lesser quality than Chomet’s previous works, A Magnificent Life boasts a classical, theatrical beauty of its own; Pagnol’s resonance with Sylvain is evident. But this 90-minute epic plays its biographical storytelling safe, favouring anecdotes over deeper introspection.

Animal Tales of Christmas Magic doesn’t try to be a holiday classic, neither does it preach any melodramatic, festive sentiment besides themes of belonging. Just simple, adorable 2D bliss, each tale cuter than the last. Obviously the best one is Ghibli-inspired. 4 > 3 > 2 > 5 > 1

The Second Act Quentin Dupieuxes too close to the sun. Though offbeat and dissatisfying as ever, Oizo wanting you to hate these bigots doesn’t excuse its loss of novelty from the opening. Dipping its toes too deep into current issues, it’s an amusing yet terminally online detour.

Soulyemane’s Story paints a visceral picture of Paris as a loud, unwelcoming capitalist hell, where families and friendships go to die. Conventions aside, this is furious and equally tragic. When seemingly no place is safe, at least – for the most part – we have public transport.
Here’s a film to lift the spirits! And to make you want to listen to more music by Ravel, Saint Saëns, and Fauré. #FrenchFilmFestival #CinéLumière
