John 20:17. Outside the empty tomb, Christ says to the Magdalene: “Touch me not for I am not yet ascended to my Father.” A moving counterpart to the unbridled rage, sorrow, and fury of the Magdalene in Niccolo dell’Arca’s later “Lamentation” terracotta group in Bologna posted yesterday. Giotto here presents us with a superb surface organization of form, line (Follow the compositional lines – both real and implied), and color. So much so that it takes the viewer beyond the merely apparent, and outside the composition – outside the work – and suggests (gives) to the viewer a brilliant – perhaps first-ever – portrayal of yearning and its feared counterpart, rejection.

Poorly studied except by specialists, 12th and 13th-century Late Byzantine images of the Passion of Christ in modern-day North Macedonia and Serbia – notably Nerezi and Studenica - became known in Italy (likely through Pisa) by 1210. There, they quickly influenced artists such as Giunta Pisano; an influence picked up directly from Giunta later by Cimabue and then (with psychological brilliance) by Giotto. In the posted image, a slightly later artist of great cosmopolitan – and Classical – skill, has brought life to Matthew 28, where the Marys arrive at the tomb of Christ on Easter morning. There, they discover the great stone sealing the tomb removed and encounter an angel seated upon it whose “countenance was like lightning” – depicted by the artist in a flame-like convention – “and his raiment was as white as snow.” “Fear not … . He is not here, for He has risen. Come see the place where the Lord lay.”

MALE FIGURE WITH CORNUCOPIA AND PLATE, FROM THE VILLA OF NUMISIA PROCULA, C. 150 CE. VATICAN MUSEUMS This idealised figure is painted in shades of red-brown against a white background. He's nude apart from two cloths wrapped around his forearms. The only other colour is green, which is used for sketched-in long leaves on the plate he holds in his right hand, more greenery emerging from the cornucopia he holds in his left hand, and a leafy crown around his head. His torso is beautifully modelled in light and shadow, his hands (always hard to paint) are convincing, and he stands with his weight on his right leg, or rather floats, as there is no ground. The artist has sketched him in outline first, and filled the figure in afterward. His form is based on a famous Greek statue, the Doryphoros or Spear-Bearer by Polykleitos. This fresco is a clear testimony of the taste for Greek art popularised by the emperor Hadrian.

WALL FRESCO FROM THE "CUBICULUM" OF THE HOUSE "OF AUGUSTUS", 30 BCE. PALATINE HILL In this rather unclear scene, we can make out two female figures. One, at centre left, is taller and facing away from us, her hair tied behind her head. She's wearing a white peplos and himation, and the elegant line of her neck draws our attention down to her shoulder and along her arm. Facing her is a shorter girl we see in profile, tilting her head as if listening as she looks at the woman in white. The girl has her brown hair in a bun and her white peplos leaves a shoulder uncovered. Her peplos is, however, red-brown with a flower or leopard-skin pattern on it. She carries a silver plate. I hope these two women are having a conversation that isn't about men, but we'll never know.

WALL FRESCO SHOWING ARIADNE ON NAXOS, C1 BCE - 69 CE. THE BRITISH MUSEUM This scene from an unidentified site in Herculaneum shows the Minoan princess Ariadne after she helped Theseus escape the Labyrinth and he took her with him on his ship, leaving Knossos and everything she knew behind her. She fell asleep on the isle of Naxos with Theseus but awakened to find him already gone, nearing the horizon. We see her lying against a red cushion, half nude, raising one arm plaintively to Theseus as he's hauling up a sail at upper right. Her helplessness and dismay are poignant. She doesn't know what Theseus does: that he was ordered to leave her, because the god Dionysus wanted her as a bride. He was a faithful husband, too.
