About poems
Is that they
Can be
Really
Short.

For #FridayFragments, Mary's funeral, among the early 15c frescoes by Lorenzo di Bicci in the Cappella Nucci-Salutati, San Francesco, Pescia. Jesus holds Mary's soul. John kneels, holding her hand to his cheek. Among apostles and angels, Andrew (left), Peter and James (rt) flank Jesus.

White hexagons are framed by bands composed of smaller rectangular, triangular, and diamond-shaped bits of dark green and purplish veined and splotched stone. When intact, they likely resembled interlace and created a star-like pattern around the hexagons.

The body of Christ is falling forward as Joseph of Arimathea holds his torso, taking him down from the cross. Christ's left arm hangs limply. To the right, we see Mary's anguished face (the rest of her figure is lost to wear) as she presses it against Christ's hand and holds his rigid arm. There is a deep blue background and the remains of the colors of robes show a rich and diverse palette, and carefully done white highlighting and hatching.
An overview of the interior of the church (with significant restoration) shows the inner ring of columns of different marble and the circular outer wall with fragments of faded frescoes.
Deposition of Christ from the Cross, San Giovanni al Sepolcro, Brindisi, 1st half of 13th century
One of the most intense and moving of the many interesting frescoes preserved in this unusual church.

Two armored and helmeted Amazon warriors: one helmet is horned, the other crested. One Amazon carries an axe, the other brandishes a spear.
Hercules, wearing a lion's skin, raises a sword.

For #FridayFragments, a #Romanesque figure of Mary and the Christ child, Bitonto Cathedral, #Puglia.
Don't share my love of fragments? Ok, here's a "whole" one on the same south wall: St Mark's evangelist symbol, the lion, with an #inscription and very toothy smile.

1/ A #Romanesque angel, now in the Museo Civico, comes from the Church of Nazareth in Barletta, #Puglia.
The church belonged to the 12th century Crusader see of Nazareth. After the Crusades, it was the seat of titular archbishops of Nazareth.
