I love all things writing and writing-related. So this blog about deciphering a runic inscription on items from the #GallowayHoard caught my attention.

I felt a bit emotional being able to see items from the #GallowayHoard up close. So incredibly detailed, I feel very privileged. I would have completely dropped my bundle if I’d been allowed to hold any of the items! #MuseumsVictoria
Absolutely thrilled that I get to see #Melbournemuseum #Gallowayhoard
It's the first time in Australia #VikingAge exhibition.
Silver pectoral cross from the Galloway Hoard which was buried at the beginning of the 10th century & discovered by a metal-detectorist in 2014 at Balmaghie in Kirkcudbrightshire. Part of the collections at the National Museum of Scotland 📸 My own #FindsFriday #GallowayHoard
Huge thanks to Brennan Dew, Evan Parker and everyone at the South Australian Museum! #gallowayhoard
Thr Alfred Jewel
Always startling to see the #AlfredJewel in real life. Especially interesting now that I've seen the #GallowayHoard which potentially destabilises the identification as an æstel.

🧵 I was asked why silver was so important to #Vikings, and to the seemingly non-Scandinavian Vikings (?!) who deposited the #GallowayHoard, and thought I'd share my off-the-cuff answer.
As with all these things, it was a mix of factors, but I think the main two were...
The silver vessel at the heart of the #GallowayHoard is on loan from National Museums Scotland to The British Museum's #SilkRoads.
Its Zoroastrian iconography, inc. fire altars, suggested a Sasanian origin (Goldberg et al.), now confirmed by elemental analysis (Kershaw et al.)!
