I've included an example screen I'm preparing for teaching in class, so students can see some of the questions one might raise about the agricultural model in the game. A combination of description, critique and questioning.

Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age Roll and Civilize your way to victory with an ancient Mediterranean empire.

It was exciting to get to see some 5th graders #GamingthePastinEd, something I pretty much never get to see. One of the really helpful things about RTTA: Bronze Age is that while highly simplified (like many games), it has "defensible models" of ancient states so her debrief will be really good. 2/

Final essay. Students played Valiant Hearts & the Grizzled several times. I'll have played intro to Battlefield 1 twice as ss. take notes & ask questions. Not sure I'll have time to fit Stategic Command: WWI (a vg wargame).

Thoughts always welcome!

A Game that Will Live in Infamy “ I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” – Admiral Yamamoto In my spare...

On this 82nd anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor I’m reminded of “A Game that Will Live in Infamy” I ran years ago as I engaged my son’s interest in World War II history; an opportunity for learning through play and thoughtful reflection.

Hmm. I may have to rethink my approach to talking about historical games studies and #GamingthePastinEd and just start hubristically posting comments no one asked for. But before this pseudo-apocalypse, does anyone have any ask-me-anything questions abt historical games inside or outside of ed.?

Competition for 2nd place (I'm truly humbly grateful Gaming the Past beats both) between main contribution I've made to Roman history and what a "popular" review article for #GamingthePastinEd. Soon, friends, Roman military history won't even be 2nd place on the list. That shift took decades.

Hi #gamestudies and #historicalGameStudies and #GamingthePastinEd folk. Let's mix things up with a weekday ask-me-anything about games and history in an out of education. Seriously, if you've ever had a huge or nit-picky question, I'll do my best to answer it thoughtfully. (re-skeets appreciated)

German-writing scholars, wherever you are doing it, are such a huge part of #HistoricalGameStudies and #GamingthePastinEd
If only I had retained reading skills from my grad reading course (such an American!), but so many of you, my German-writing colleagues and friends are very kind to me anyway

Any history educators using board & video games I can connect with out there? Found my #gamestudies friends, & I keep finding my colleagues from X but I'd love to be able to reach new history educator colleagues with postings on #GamingthePastinEd. (grateful for boosts; do we call them boosts here?)

Educator tip for students to take satisfactory notes on a game. If a history game, use #HistoricalProblemSpace. Also instruct students to make notes detailed enough that a person who hasn't seen the game can visualize and understand what they are describing.
