"Mata Mua (In Olden Times)" is an 1892 painting by French post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin. It depicts a Tahitian landscape with several figures and is characterized by its bright, flat colors and rejection of naturalism. The painting is housed at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Key elements of the painting include: Composition: A large tree dominates the center, dividing the scene. In the foreground, two women are seated, while in the background, other figures are gathered around a statue. Figures: The painting features several Tahitian women, some of whom are engaged in activities such as playing the flute or dancing. A statue of Hina, the goddess of the moon, is also present. Landscape: The background includes a pink mountain, trees, and other vegetation, creating a tropical setting. Color and Style: Gauguin used bright, flat colors and bold outlines, which is characteristic of his Synthetist style. This approach to color was innovative, as he used it for its emotive qualities rather than to mimic nature. The painting is considered a hymn to a simpler, more natural lifestyle and an elegy for a lost Golden Age. Gauguin sought to capture the essence of "primitive" cultures in his work, viewing them as an escape from civilization.
