Beaty, a 2-time All-Star in the @NBA before jumping to the rival league, scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. The win moves the #Blazers to a 2-0 record in the round-robin tournament, matching the #ChicagoBulls, who defeated the #SeattleSuperSonics in the game prior to the Stars and Blazers contest. Petrie informed #Hawks GM #MikeStoren his decision this past week according to the #AtlantaConstitution before being reported today. "I tried to play basketball heavy in late July," Petrie said, adding, "but I realized I there was no way I could compete in the #NBA anymore." Despite his injury, the Hawks offered a contract to Petrie, but he refused to sign, saying, "I couldn't accept it, it would have been dishonest."

With the pick the #Blazers selected #MauriceLucas formally with the #KentuckyColonels. With their own selection, in the fifth spot, the Blazers selected #MosesMalone of the #SpiritsofStLouis. Petrie was the Blazers first pick in the 1970 @NBA Draft from #Princeton and held all the clubs scoring records at the time of the trade. Among them were most points in a season (2,031) and in a game with 51 points, hitting that mark twice in 1973.
In addition, Petrie was listed as the career leader in scoring, with 9,732 points, as well as the career leader in FGM (3,970), FGA (8,719), FTM (1,792), FTA (2,225), and Assists (2,057), Games (446), and Minutes (16,787). Other than games played and minutes, Petrie is still ranked in Top-10 in those categories today. Petrie shared the #NBA #ROY Award in 1970 with #BostonCeltics center #DaveCowens and twice played in the annual All-Star game (1971 and ’74). Petrie became the first #Portland player to earn a starting position in the 1974 game.
Lucas and Malone each had played the past 2 seasons in the ABA, Lucas initially with #StLouis before a trade to #Kentucky. Malone, the first player to join the pro ranks from High School, played with #UtahStars during his rookie season but joined St. Louis when Stars folded 11 games into the final ABA season.
#SteveHawes joined the Blazers last season when the Blazers traded #JohnJohnson to the #HoustonRockets. Hawes played for the #UnivofWashington prior to joining #Rockets in the 1974 NBA draft.
August 5, 1976 - #GeoffPetrie, the last Original @trailblazers.bsky.social, was traded along with back up center #SteveHawes to the #AtlantaHawks for the second pick in the #ABA Dispersal Draft.

In the four games between Maravich and Petrie, Maravich outscored Petrie by 8 (92 to 84) and had 28 assists compared to Petrie with 17. Petrie had a better FG and FT%, hitting 41% to 37% from the field and 88% from the line, compared to 81% for Maravich. Petrie out-rebounded Maravich 19-15.

Bill Walton, who played with a broken nose and no mask, added 16 points, 13 rebounds and tied Petrie with 7 assists. Wicks topped the 30 point mark 55 times in his 5 years with the #Blazers, while Petrie had 75 such games. Surprisingly though, they only had 6 games where they both topped the mark together. The most the two combined for was on January 20 1973 when each scored career-highs. Petrie scored 51 and Wicks added 38 in the #Blazers victory vs the Houston Rockets.
