The long green leaves and two tall (over 2 feet tall, in fact) stalks of Gladioli flowers still closed, in bud. The smooth budded areas - which almost resemble a gigantic asparagus tip - are slowly turning a soft rose pink, hinting at the bright pink flowers we hope to see emerge along these standout flower stems. In the background, beyond the concrete sidewalk path, is a large variety of Cotoneaster, with long stems of tiny, dark green, shiny leaves and lots of red berries starting to appear. This shrub was here when we moved in and divides our front path from our neighbourโs. It grows and regrows quickly and haphazardly and has to be trimmed a lot each year - a task our neighbour kindly tends to (as he has the proper garden equipment/trimmer). Those red berries are loved by Blackbirds and the entire, dense shrub is a habitat for all sorts of insects (another food source for birds). Garden For Wildlife, however you might be able to. They need all the help we can give. This photo by tamโs partner, was taken before the storm that blew through the last 3 days. Weโre pleased these are still standing, having been secured to bamboo stakes. ~๐
August 2023: A single, bright pink gladiolus flower, with large, curly edged petals that make it appear almost like a big, fuchsia-pink circle of ruffles. Sunlight is pouring through the petals, creating light and shadows that add to its natural beauty. Behind it are two bamboo stakes, to which gladiolus plants have been secured by string. Blurred especially in the lefthand background are actually the light purple flowers of russian sage which eventually overran the entire garden patch in 2025โs hot, dry Summer. I couldnโt recall which of us took this photo in 2023, so have credited both myself and my partner. The Gladioli would normally have bloomed around the time of year this was taken, in late August. But this yearโs stalks - seen in the first Photo - stayed submerged only to surprise us in the last couple weeks, having survived months of heatwaves, drought & that awful russian sage plant invasion, which had to be thoroughly dug up - breaking more than one garden implement in the process ๐ณ -before anything else had a chance of growing/returning. Weโre hoping those two new Gladiolus stalks will have several flowers just like this one, if and when they open. ๐ -tam๐

Soft pink frilled edges with a white centre. There are 2 open flowers with a number of unopened buds above which are a light red in colour. Bright green sword like leaves below.
