Three women, Marshall, Texas ca. June 19,1900 (printed 2006/07)
Gelatin silver print
The Gabriele Münter and Johannes Eichner Foundation, Munich 3635
Among the photographs Gabriele Münter took during her U.S. travels is an important set documenting the Emancipation Day (now Juneteenth) celebrations in Marshall, Texas, on June 19, 1900. This image is likely part of that group. Münter photographed three Black women walking through the center of town, elegantly dressed and carrying parasols. They stand between her camera and the gazes of several white children behind them. With quiet defiance, two of the women meet Münter's lens directly, while the third looks to the left.
The next day, Münter wrote to her brother in Germany that she "snapped as though body and soul depended on it," but ran out of film. Other photographs from the event feature riders on horseback, parade floats, and crowds captured from behind, all of which situate the artist as an onlooker. Colonial structures of privilege and power frame Münter's positionality as a German woman visiting the American South. Nonetheless, her images suggest an effort to preserve the agency of her subjects.

I wonder if this is one of the earliest Juneteenth photographs ever taken

A crumpled and deformed square tube bent towards itself in the shape of a reverse R-like shape, mounted on a dark gray wall. The tube is painted in a gradient that starts orange and ends in a pale pink at the other end.

There are more reasons to visit #Bilbao in northern #Spain than the #GuggenheimMuseum. But this iconic building has truly changed the fate of the city.

I’ve wished to feel nothing—but then beauty like this appears, and I remember why I still care.

How could anyone be heartless in a world that creates this?

Spanish artist Pablo Picasso met French model Marie-Thérèse Walter, the subject of this portrait, in 1927 when she was 17 years old. They began an intense love affair, but concealed it from the public as she was a teenager and the artist was married. However, Picasso documented their early years together, albeit cryptically, by including the monograms “MT” and “MTP” in some works of the time.

By 1931, Marie-Thérèse’s supple body and blond tresses regularly appear as harmonious, voluptuous depictions such in Picasso's work such as "Woman with Yellow Hair." She became a constant theme and was was portrayed reading, gazing into a mirror, and, most often, sleeping, which for Picasso was the most intimate of depictions.

The abbreviated delineation of Marie-Thérèse's profile—a continuous, arched line from forehead to nose—became Picasso’s "emblem" for his favorite subject of the time, and appears in numerous sculptures, prints, and paintings of Marie-Thérèse. Rendered in a sweeping, curvilinear style, this painting of graceful repose is not so much a portrait of Marie-Thérèse the person as it is Picasso’s abstract, poetic homage to his young muse.

Although painted nearly 20 years after the artist’s initial experimentation with Cubism, Picasso’s simplification of Marie-Thérèse’s figure into primary shapes can be traced back to that painterly technique. The undulating lines, rounded organic shapes, and saturated hues attest to the artist’s appreciation of contemporary developments in painting such as Surrealism. Picasso was influenced by their investigation into dreams as a portal to the subconscious, and the bright, playful colors he has chosen for this portrait may represent dream imagery.

Picasso worked prolifically until his death in 1973 at 92. During his career, Picasso produced roughly 50,000 works of art, ranging from paintings and sculpture to ceramics and drawings.
