Dear Dr Huq, I am loathe to write to you again. I hate politics, as I mentioned to you in my previous email, and it hurts my heart to once again contemplate the terrible muddle this country is in. However, I cannot keep silent in the face of such cruelty and chaos. In your previous email, you said that the government would "remove indignities for trans people". I would like to ask you: how do you square this with Bridget Phillipson saying that trans women should use the men's bathroom? I cannot think of anything more undignified. Or dangerous. How is it dignified for someone with curves, breasts, soft skin, etc. to be expected to use the men's bathroom? Does that not open trans women and trans feminine people up to a world of harassment, sexual and otherwise? As you can see from these statistics, hate crimes against trans people have increased exponentially in recent years. And the Supreme Court's decision is going to make the situation even worse. It is also going to increase harassment against women who are not even trans. Women who are butch or androgynous. Women who are athletic. Women who are intersex. Women who have facial hair due to hormone imbalances. Anyone who does not fit within the confines of what a woman "should" look like. This harassment is already happening, but it's going to happen even more because bigoted people will now feel further emboldened by the ruling and Labour's support of that ruling.
Added to that, there are nonbinary people out there who already face abuse when they use the toilet that is intended for their assigned sex, as per Phillipson's advice. This atmosphere of fear and hatred, that Labour is enabling, will worsen conditions for them, too. A friend of mine is in this situation, and he fears for his personal safety. Some people claim that this ruling provides clarity, but it will only create confusion and chaos. Look at the situation for trans men and trans masculine people. They are now expected to use women's facilities, one would assume, right? Only the ruling contains caveats that if someone's appearances are too masculine, then they can't use those facilities either. So, what are they supposed to do? The whole thing is a total farce. It is nonsensical and disgusting and I will not stand for it. As I said to you in my previous email, if you are as proud of Labour's part in the Gender Recognition Act as you say you are, then why don't you fight for it? Because right now that piece of legislation is being ripped to shreds. I look forward to hearing from you, Your constituent,
