This stretch of Jökulsárgljúfur reveals just how powerfully water shapes a landscape.
Downstream from Dettifoss, the river slows, bends, and deepens as it carves its way through layers of basalt. On the far left, Hafragilsfoss marks another chapter in this long geological story.
What draws the eye immediately, though, is the strikingly coloured water on the right — a vivid turquoise pool formed where currents meet, sediments settle, and glacial minerals transform the river’s tone. It’s a reminder that even within the same flow, water can appear calm or violent, muted or luminous.
A landscape shaped by raw force — scaped by water.

For today’s Scape Day, I’m hanging out in Jökulsárgljúfur again. Hafragilsfoss sits on the left — featured in one of my recent photos.
Today’s theme: scaped by water.

A powerful waterfall plunges into a rugged canyon. Glacial meltwater surges over a broad, broken basalt lip, exploding into white spray as it drops between sheer, columned cliffs. The river continues downstream through the narrow gorge, framed by moss-covered rock terraces and stark volcanic formations, emphasizing the raw force and scale of Iceland’s landscape.
