Just found one of these sheltering on our porch during a brief rain downpour just now. Always nice to find an easily identifiable fly, the spines on the wing edge were most helpful! #heleomyzidae

Scoliocentra villosa โ™‚ on a fallow deer corpse at #AllerthorpeCommon this week. A favourite spiny-winged fly, found around badger setts, carrion and in caves. This one rather lacking in the fore tarsal area! #Heleomyzidae @dipteristsforum.bsky.social @ynuorg.bsky.social

My 1st ever record of an undescribed species of #Tephrochlamys. ID confirmed. Unlike other members of the genus, this species has a pair of presutural dorsocentral bristles. #Diptera #Heleomyzidae #CemeteryWildlifeWatch recording activity on #iRecord.

Finally some fungi appearing locally in East Yorkshire, and with those come the fungus-breeding, spiny-winged heleomyzid flies, like this gorgeous Suillia notata at Cali Heath @yorkswildlife.bsky.social reserve. #heleomyzidae @ynuorg.bsky.social @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

Scoliocentra villosa โ™‚ (Heleomyzidae). One of my favourite flies...large, orange and blue-grey, with a soft fuzziness throughout. And they live in caves and badger setts and hang around mammalian corpses...what's not to like?!! #heleomyzidae #ento @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

Not entirely sure whether this is copulation or a game of leap-frog! Several pairs of Neoleria propinqua (Heleomyzidae) in cop. today, not remotely affected by recent snow and yesterday's -6 degrees. #ento #diptera #heleomyzidae

Below freezing overnight, but winter-active spiny-winged flies don't care! Neoleria propinqua in cop. alongside a dead Rook. Categorised as provisionally Near Threatened in the last review, but actually far from uncommon around carrion in winter. #ento #heleomyzidae @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

I can only apologise for the fact that there will be lots of photos of spiny-winged flies here...today's a Suillia notata โ™‚ as usual holding territory atop a mushroom. No serious frosts yet, so the woods are still alive with Suillia. #ento #UKwildlife #britishwildlife #heleomyzidae
