Two nice hens at the base of an ancient fallen red oak. I found them five days before harvesting them, when they were still quite small, and hid them under a very large piece of bark that had already peeled off the trunk--not to keep them out of the pieholes of other foragers, but to keep them from being munched by deer
Two kilos of cleaned hens in a large porcelain bowl. It didn't take long to process them, as I got to the mushies before the roly-poly bugs
That's not to say there weren't other smol critters needing encouragement to find new homes
Cooked mushroom pickles in a large pot--enough for gifting once canned and to last my wife and me through the year I used forager chef Alan Bergo's recipe, to which I added cilantro and various hot peppers for more of a kick Pepper varieties visible in the photo: red and yellow Ho Chi Minhs, a green serrano, and the only ghost pepper I managed to grow this year, having planted a little late

A nice hen growing under a downed red oak, its florets practically white, I suspect from growing in very low light conditions

A large hen, with three, maybe five chicks above and below it, growing in a depression where a red oak once stood. Notice the dark coloration, presumably from growing in the sun. --Although who really knows. After all, the chick at the very bottom is practically white, and it's out in the sun, too. Maybe it will turn darker, with longer light exposure? I harvested the big one, but left the chicks to grow. The ground below the plucked hen was quite wet, even though there's been no rain for a month. 👟 for scale
Walked down Aisle 5 at Whole Foods, where they display the maitake

I gently removed the mature ones and placed them in a big CAVA take-away bag
.
Went home feeling richer than the White House Border Czar and a lot cleaner

A thumb lifts a frond of a grey-brown hen-of-the-woods mushroom.
This is a Hen of the Woods, an edible mushroom that grows by the base of older oaks/maples in October. It doesn't have dangerous lookalikes, making it one of the safer (and most delicious) mushrooms to forage in New England. I fry it in butter until just crispy. #foraging #mushroom #henofthewoods

En ook #zwavelzwam is weer overal te zien. Ik heb de indruk dat ie baat gehad heeft bij het natte weer. Eetbaar - mits niet al te oud. Licht zurig, en verder en structuur smaak van kip. Het daarom ook wel #boskip #henofthewoods.
