The recipe is written in list form down the page including amounts of flour, butter, sugar, eggs and currents and the direction to have the “Oven not to Hot”. On the right hand page is a recipe for ‘Pork pies’. It reads “1/2lb crust paste, 6oz meat, to 1lb pie & so on.”

This is very emphatically not carp in black sauce, but a 5-4-3-2-1 berry cake I made for my hosts while travelling. The topping is a mix of storebought and gathered berries. They are placed on a layer of vanilla custard ('Vanillepudding') and held in place by being topped with sweetened gelatin ('Tortenguss'). The base is a child-friendly quick mixture of 5 tablespoons of flour, four of sugar, three whole eggs, two tablespoons of oil, one of vinegar, and a teaspoon of baking powder. I'm back from my holiday and can resume my posting of #historicrecipes. Today, it's a staple of German #medieval cuisine: Black sauce for fish, specifically carp.
