As of Saturday just gone I'm a member of The British Society for the History of Mathematics's council. I was invited to join as someone who can provide a school teacher's viewpoint.
As such, I'm very interested to know who...

Wouldn't it be awful if the first 3 recorded Women in the #HistoryofMaths were lost.
At least we get the 4th - Hypatia. SPOILER: her story does not make the patriarchy look any better. Would you like to know why?

A copy of my book, The Mathematicians' Library, stands upright on a pillar of seven other copies stacked on top of each other. They are flanked by other maths-themed books.
First time I've seen it in the wild! The Mathematicians' Library on sale at a stand run by Kenilworth Books at #TMiP25
I was so surprised I accidentally signed them all!

A bit of a fun one today on #themathematicianspodcast
We look at Philo of Byzantium who was probably the first mad scientist in history.
Expect magic, catapults and a repeating crossbow.

So #Pappus got up to some spicy maths back in the 3rdC BCE.
Inscribed circles each a distance of n diameters from the base.
I am looking forward to this episode of #themathematicianspodcast

A square cut in four, with one quarter cut in four, and this pattern repeated. Each level with one quarter shaded. The proof is that the sum of 1/4^n = 1/3
I was reading up on #Archimedes and came across this gem. A beautiful proof of a geometric sequence using geometry.
See if you can figure out how it relates to the #quadrature of the #parabola

Today I learnt:
The symbol for infinity has a name, it is a "Lemniscate" to mean "ribbon".
One version takes its definition from the locci of points with a constant product of distances from two fixed foci.

A triangle ACB with BC cut by E, AC cut by F and AB colinear with D, and triangle AFD drawn.
"It can readily be proved by elementary geometry that AD*BE*CF = BD*CE*AF..."
Go on then, how can I readily prove this in a time before algebra and trigonometry?

A new episode of #themathematicianspodcast has dropped today. Would you like to discover 2500 year old calculus? I think in these uncertain times, we all should.
Come on down to your favourite podcast app and join me there.

If you're following me and you're interested in #HistoryOfMaths, what's your favourite #history of #maths story?
Today I heard about a lovely quote from a Chinese historian of mathematics whose name has not yet stuck in my brain. The quote was something like...
"Studying the history of mathematics does not make better mathematicians, but it makes gentler, more thoughtful ones."

I spent all day writing on Greek Mathematicians: Thales, Pythagoras, Eudoxus, Euclid & Archimedes.
What'd I miss today?
