#FossilFriday, The Midwest’s #Homotherium! A partial skullcap, the first Homotherium serum specimen found in Minnesota, recovered in 2008 from Tyson Spring Cave in Fillmore County.
The find, along with a Cervalces skullcap, was published by Chris Widga and colleagues in Boreas (Widga et al., 2012).
This #Homotherium cub is the first of its kind. This 3-week old #sabertooth cub died aprox. 32,000 years ago, and is the first #extinct mammal with no living modern descendants to be studied by scientists.
Homotherium latidens, the scimitar cat. Related to Smilodon, it was one of the last of the machairodont cats. They hunted large open habitat mammals like horses, bison, and young mammoths. Long robust legs allowed them to pursue and grapple such prey.
