University to women: be more assertive Women: are more assertive University: there’s been a complaint
A keeper moment from @academic-chatter.bsky.social

A straight ratcheted forcep, labelled 'Needle Gripper- Quilting' displayed amongst sewing machines and other quilting supplies.
The quilting section at Spotlight makes the 'are women suited to surgery?' discussion seem ludicrous. Quilters have been piecing fabric and driving needles through complex designs for centuries. Needle holders, right angle forceps, cutting blades- all here. #ILookLikeASurgeon #MedSky

Things I like about this paper from Dr Ekaterina Koelliker and team: the framing of Lack of Workplace Supports (LOWS), a refreshing change from the more usual 'let's fix women' lens.
The thing I don't like though: the 'both sexes' language. 🥴🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

A Royal Australasian College of Surgeons-branded tote bag made of hessian with royal blue piping on the edges and handle.
An older male surgeon, spotting my bag at a student career event, said 'Oh! do you want to be a surgeon?' and tried to tell me why it's a great choice. 🤣
That's not a response I ever got back in the 90s. We *are* making progress on gender equity. #ILookLikeASurgeon 🤗
A slide in Spanish with the title 'Diferentes Copas' (English translation 'different cups') and pictures of women wearing bras (and nothing else) in sizes A to D.
A lecture about the sizing of hip joint replacements making a totally unnecessary comparison to breast sizes. This is appalling sexism in surgery. 🤨

'Can we reimagine surgical culture? Not by lowering standards, but by widening the lens?'
Fabulous and wise words from Miss Rahi Karmarkar about how inclusion 'isn’t about being better or worse, but about being different in a way that strengthens the whole.'

The pilot data is very convincing; almost all the women have been told they can't be a surgeon due to their gender, while none- none!- of the men have.

Another day, another talk shining a light on the murky corners in medicine… patients suffer when doctors don’t feel safe. I am proud of our strong response @collegeofsurgeons.bsky.social This behaviour must stop now 💪🏽 #ILookLikeASurgeon #MeToo @nhsemployers.bsky.social #RCOG2025
Skeleton staff Actually, in some areas of medicine sex truly does matter, and not for reasons of decorum. There is a reason 90 per cent of orthopaedic surgeons are male. It's to do with the sheer physicality of the job; the manipulation and manhandling of heavy bodies and joints. Orthopaedic surgeons are known in the industry as carpenters the way heart specialists refer to themselves as plumbers. In America, they get called jocks too. Big guys, bit sporty, working in a field that has relevance to them. Welsh rugby legend JPR Williams was an orthopaedic surgeon. It was said he spent his Saturdays drumming up trade and Monday morning cashing in. Yet when my lad needed his first hip operation, the leading specialist in the country turned out to be female, Sarah Muirhead-Allwood led the team that performed groundbreaking surgery on Sir Andy Murray and the Queen Mother, among others. There was a reason she could handle the load beyond expertise. Sarah was, until 1996, William; and the Queen Mum less reactionary than was thought.
I heard about @thetimes.com article from UK colleagues- but I was not prepared for this. A sexist dig at women, a stereotyping of orthopaedic surgeons as 'carpenters' and cardiothoracic surgeons as 'plumbers', and a final snark about transgender. Appalling.

Terrible newspaper article
Lies saying only men are strong enough to be orthopods
BOA response to the article
Shocking article in the Times, perpetrating outdated stereotypes. Sports writer shows misplaced arrogance, rudely dismissing all women in Orthopaedics. BOA and BHS have responded. We need immediate apology and retraction @thetimes.com do better
