Impact of mistreatment on the learning of novice medical students: An experimental study Mistreatment has ripple effects. Even vicarious exposure can impair novice medical students' ability to learn, underscoring the hidden costs of toxic environments.

Another RCT showing the negative effect of poor workplace culture on performance. Medical students witnessing video evidence of disrespect towards another medical student subsequently performed worse on an academic task.

Greg 'gotta bury the body' Malham also practised for years at Epworth. To me, the obvious next question is- how many other surgeons at Epworth are 'open secrets' to their colleagues? πŸ€”

A lecture about the sizing of hip joint replacements making a totally unnecessary comparison to breast sizes. This is appalling sexism in surgery. 🀨

'I'll take 'women' for 50 points again, thanks Bob'

I'm not sure why news outlets keep going to the same wrong, outdated commentators again and again. We don't accept racism, sexism, or badmouthing colleagues any more.

How do I deal with a colleague who’s been inappropriate towards me? Many doctors experience distressing inappropriate behaviour from colleagues, including unwelcome sexual comments and advances. Tom Moberly hears advice on how to tackle such behaviour Chelcie Jewitt,...

Two important points from Dr Chelcie Jewitt @survivinginscrubs.bsky.social

1. If you do not feel safe, you do *not* have to speak up. Safety comes first.
2. There is no rush. Please seek support and advice, and decide on next actions that are right for *you*.

I'm not sure I want to know what else he considers 'a joke' 😬

Thoughts please #MedSky #MedEd. What do you *do* (actions) when you have a senior colleague with suspected cognitive decline? I'm interested in #OperateWithRespect options that maintain privacy and dignity while avoiding 'walking past until reputation-ruining crisis'. πŸ€”

We talk about staff burnout, workforce turnover, lowered productivity etc. but this πŸ‘‡is a good reminder that culture matters because it ALL comes back to patient care.

Re-upping this study from @jasonmharley.bsky.social and team. What happens when surgery residents witness harassment in simulation? A lot of *not* speaking up πŸ€”.

The reasons why (or why not) provide important considerations for #CultureChange.

It is LITERALLY #IWD2025 today, with the theme #RightsEqualityEmpowerment and we still have to put up with this. In Australia. In 2025. In plain view.

He is still exactly like that. When I write curricula or develop resources for @racsurgeons.bsky.social #OperateWithRespect or A Better Culture (the Commonwealth project) he's one of the people I have in mind as exemplars.

I always put a disclaimer on it (being an #OperateWithRespect advocate) that it illustrates the pitfalls of stereotypes, because most of the orthopods I know are *not* like this. Punch up, not down. πŸ€£πŸ‘

OK #MedSky, on a pt's first outpatient clinic visit (or any visit really) please don't be the sort of doctor who says 'I'm here to screen out the dross from the GP referrals'.

Disrespectful to GP colleagues and disrespectful to the patient. πŸ˜–πŸ‘Ž

Totally agree. Social context, prior team culture, intent vs perception- all of this is important to consider, and after nearly 9 years of #OperateWithRespect I am hoping organisations are ready for these conversations instead of the simplistic and hammer-like 'zero tolerance' approach.

Wonderful model for healthy workplace culture from COSA (Clinical Oncological Society Australia- sadly not yet on πŸ¦‹). It's only partly true that it is a leadership responsibility, because it won't work unless leaders are willing to also engage with humility- and *listen*.

I heard the same 'but it's just banter' justification in surgical spaces for years- about a decade and a half- before we were able to start changing the narrative through the RACS #OperateWithRespect project, now in its 9th year. Change takes ages. Sport culture needs to start NOW.

Fascinating study of hashtags like #ILookLikeASurgeon #OperateWithRespect.

'The cyclical nature of hashtag activity suggests that hashtags remain popular after their β€˜trending’ period and this significantly increases the potential outreach of the tweets.'

Another @racsurgeons #OperateWithRespect course delivered. We are now in our 9th year and it's amazing how much the conversations have changed. The scenarios we wrote in 2016 as 'unsure' examples have recently had to be revised because changing norms made them clearly 'unacceptable'! 🀯
