Though I typically avoid actively engaging in politics for the sake of my own sanity, recent ‘backlash’ directed towards Ana Valens from a certain corner of the VTuber fandom has convinced me to speak up this time. My experience with the VTuber community is that the large majority of us are very welcoming of the LGBTQIA rainbow, with many VTubers who are either part of the rainbow themselves, or happy to support and/or collab with their LGBTQIA colleagues without a fuss. However there also exists a less welcoming side, one that is very vocal about what they like and what they hate. The broader community rarely endorses this reactionary faction or creators who pander to it, but also typically stops short of calling them out in the way Ana Valens called out Kirsche last month. The logic seems to be that it’s not worth provoking an all out war that could spread toxicity across the broader VTuber community, and that many of these less welcoming fans may grow out of it as they become older and wiser. The problem however is that our relative silence allows the minority to have disproportionate control on what people just entering the fandom see, with many VTuber drama channels in particular having a reactionary bias (see how they covered the Hogwarts Legacy saga). Hence, the number of fans who would be inclined to support trans-unfriendly VTubers has not shrunk over time, because there are always new fans out there who can replace anyone who does ‘grow out of’ that sphere of influence. What Ana Valens did was very brave. Many of us have known for a while that Kirsche is part of the alt-right, and her comments previously led to her getting banned from having a panel at OffKai (a major VTubing expo) last year.
But few of us dared to call this behaviour out further despite her still very much being a problem, continuing to act abusive towards those she perceives as the ‘enemy’. Ana was the one brave enough to poke her head of the trenches by highlighting the truth about Kirsche and the type of fan she courts. For this, she was persecuted and told to off herself by that side of the VTuber fanbase. Not to mention some of Ana’s detractors also latched onto some flimsy evidence to accuse her of being a paedophile. These sorts of accusations long been despised in the VTuber and greater Otaku sphere, generally being attributed to ‘tourists’ trying to shame us for our hobby. So for them to engage in that sort of behaviour was extremely hypocritical, especially given that one of their other arguments was to dismiss Ana Valens as a tourist for accusing VAllure of loli-pandering. But of course it was never about paedophilia, wasn’t it? It was always about having an excuse to hate a trans-woman, just like it was for Asmongold this month when he cherry picked and misrepresented Nyara’s words. I’m disappointed in VICE for capitulating to what was clearly a SLAPP suit filed by Kirsche. Ana Valens showed evidence to support her claims throughout the articles that were pulled from the website, and any claims of defamation would’ve been dismissed early on in the legal process. But VICE instead allowed Kirsche and her supporters to claim victory, because “clearly it was defamation if legal action got the articles taken down!” Thankfully they’re still accessible through archive links, but the visibility of this ongoing issue in the community was greatly lessened. Should Ana Valens herself find this short essay, I’d like to remind her that she is not alone. Your persecutors do not represent the majority of VTuber fans, and I just hope the rest of us are resilient and trans-inclusive enough to make sure transphobes remain outliers in the fanbase.

Been a little radio silent about this the last week, a little too radio silent even. Amongst recent billd attacking us, and the harassment getting worse and worse for her, if we're all still on the same page of #IStandWithAnaValens we need to do something more, make some sort of loud statement-
