Vertical landscape photo of a scene with autumn trees, fog and a creek. The creek is flowing through a steep bed of large rounded cobbles and small boulders. The smattering of yellow trees is set amidst a mountainside thickly wooded with evergreens, with the fog playing and extruding tendrils among them.

Photograph of autumn forest floor. The frame is dominated by two deciduous leaves, one yellow at bottom right, the other brown at upper left. They are surrounded by tiny green leaves of plants and moss, twigs and orange cedar fronds, with a number of tiny white mushrooms sprouting in the midst of everything.

Visions from the October Country Bull River Valley, Montana “The October Country… that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusk…

An October favorite post from a few years back:

The Woods and the Water The Idaho Panhandle is a fascinating and beautiful region, but it is sadly unprotected. A land the glaciers have only just left, it is a web if deep valleys, steep mountains, huge lakes and lush wo…

Just dropped a big set on the blog from a beautiful and unprotected area of Idaho inland rainforest. Please take a look if such things interest you!

Vertical image of clear wilderness river. The river, which is not huge and might reasonably be called a creek, is flowing over a prominant bedrock fin and around a large boulder, with a smooth tongue breaking into an elegant whitewater circulation. The water has a cool turquoise tint. The far bank is forested with green leaves, cedar trunks and deadfall visible. In the foreground, a collection of rounded river stones is visible under the water in a bedrock pocket.

Something beautiful from northern Idaho, a region which needs its beauty.

A rock on lush forest floor. The rock is surrounded and partially covered by green forest growth, with conifer needles, lichen, a stick and a couple leafy plants also visible. The rock's exposed surface has a fine-line and intricate pattern of dark marks, probably lichen.

#RockinTuesday Not much to say on this one. I found this reticulated rock in super lush north Idaho inland rainforest last week, a land where most of the rocks are under cedar roots and moss.

Detail image of schist outcrop in northern Idaho. Rock is primarily yellow-orange with darker banding visible, with some bands compressed into wavelike pattern by metamorphic processes. A smattering of pale green lichen is visible.

Detail of highly metamorphosed rock outcrop in northern Idaho. Rock is mostly black and white in a sort of reticulated pattern, with two reddish inclusins (garnets I think? ) visible. Mineral specks in the black rock can be seen reflecting more vividly colored glints of orange and blue if one looks closely.

Detail of gneiss boulder in northern Idaho. The rock is full of contrasting bands of dark gray and white, with the banding folded by metamorphic processes into an overall L-shape.

Detail of roadcut in northern Idaho. Top right of image is mostly full of dark black stone (amphibolite?) marbled with veins of white, while lower left is mainly banded schist with an overall rusty hue, and with obvious folding and boudinage. Some vertical lines of dynamite drill holes from the road cut are visible in the scene.

#RockinTuesday Last week I took a little tour to photograph some of the oldest rocks in Idaho. Here are four details from the Priest River Metamorphic Core Complex, with ages from around 1.6 to 2.6 billion years.
