The Monroe Doctrine didn’t end empire—it rebranded it.
Smedley Butler said the quiet part out loud: U.S. interventions weren’t defense, they were rackets for capital.
Empire didn’t vanish. It changed management.

Jenie Gao holding up an edition of their print on cotton muslin canvas, Pigeon, from The Negotiation Table: Cycle | Breaking and Making.

The tabletop in progress. Jenie's two large-scale woodblocks are of Fènghuáng (mythological Chinese bird) and the homing pigeon fly in an eternal circular chase.

The blocks, printed in gradients of light jade green and vermilion red, are embedded in the surface of a reclaimed Chippendale style table.

Chippendale is attributed to a British furniture designer and British / American colonial aesthetic. However, this furniture was culturally appropriated from Ming Dynasty Chinese furniture. Europeans coveted Eastern goods so greatly that they funded shipping expeditions in search of a shorter route to Asia. In other words, the western expansion project and colonization of Turtle Island or what people today know as North America, is inextricable from Europeans' desire to possess and subdue Asia, a struggle that continues to shape politics and conquest to this day.

Britain needs to abandon its delusions of empire – giving up the Chagos Islands is a good start | Simon Jenkins Labour says it is committed to other ‘overseas territories’, but why? These colonial-era dreams are costing the country dear, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

“The British empire still sends governments mad,” opines Simon Jenkins on the subject of the Chagos Islands, Falklands, other overseas territories, and how British “Delusions of grandeur never cease.”
