Benjamin Franklin and fellow U.S. Founding Father Benjamin Rush helped create the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage. The name was eventually shortened to the Pennsylvania Abolition Society and Ben Franklin was elected president of the group. In that role, Franklin asked the U.S. Congress in 1790 to abolish slavery. It led to heated debate among lawmakers, but no action.

Charles Elliott’s definition of slavery: a person stripped of ownership of themselves—body, mind, all capacities—transferred to another’s proprietorship. He doesn’t embellish. The question is whether tolerance for that erasure has outlasted the institution.

Lee’s surrender effectively ended the Civil War, though other battles and surrenders took place over the next few months.
The brief meeting between Grant and Lee produced two important pieces of writing, though, according to historians with the National Park Service, there is no formal surrender document. They wrote, “The surrender was conducted through an exchange of two short letters. Grant’s was a mere five sentences long and Lee’s reply was only three short, terse sentences.” These two letters became the model for all the surrendering Confederate armies, and the terms of parole for their soldiers.

Black graphic with an image of the title page of The Gospel of the Typical Servitude, a sermon preached in Greenfield, Ohio, by Samuel Crothers (1783–1856), Pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Beside it is a quote: “He instructs them by his word and spirit, and clothes them with his righteousness and feeds them with the bread of life, and protects them from all their enemies. Hence the disciples loved to call Jesus master. They gloried in the title, servants of Jesus Christ. They would not have exchanged it for that of Caesar. It humbled them, and cheered them and kept alive in their hearts a sense of their obligations to the Saviour who had done so great things for them.“

Samuel Crothers: both enslavers and Jesus are called “Master.” But consider what Jesus gave those who called him that. Slavery didn’t merely oppress bodies—it poisoned a sacred word, turning a term of divine tenderness into something people now flinch to say.

Theodor Cuyler, Dutch #Reformed pastor in NYC, declared slavery a crime against Christ Himself. To abuse a believer is to “scourge the blessed Jesus,” for His people bear His image.
How would you treat others if you truly saw each neglected or wronged person as Christ’s representative?

You think things are bad now? Well, you're right. They are.
But look how pro-slavery writer Benjamin Franklin Stringfellow described abolitionists in the 1850s (this and other writings radicalized John Brown, executed on this day in 1859):

In 1839, he co-authored the book American Slavery as It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses. The author Harriet Beecher Stowe partly based her landmark novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin on Weld's text. Her father, Lyman Beecher, described Weld as “eloquent as an angel, and powerful as thunder.” Beecher also said that Weld’s words were “logic on fire.”

When people claim that the fulfilment of basic needs for all would destroy the incentive to work, they are admitting the entire capitalist system is based in coercion; that is a form of slavery ("work for us or starve"). Labour can never be voluntary in such a system.
