Saw #ImportanceOfBeingEarnest in London last night. #StephenFry was an excellent cantankerous old dame in full Victorian dress. The show is pure joy. Don’t miss it. The finale was something else!

Ncuti Gatwa dressed in a beautiful light gree suit with an emerald bow tie and matching waistcoat, but he is not wearing trousers, rather, undergarments and shoes and socks with sock suspenders.

He looks at us inquisitively as he climbs through a window in the pink wall behind him.

Link to the script for "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde, 1893, at the Internet Archive. Publication, 1899. Every bit as much fun to read as watch.

Earnest/Jack/John Worthing (Michael Redgrarve) in tennis whites, appropriate for his christening, in order to be wed to Gwendolen Fairfax (Joan Greenwood) who is now dressed in pink. In the foreground is Edith Evans as Lady Augusta Bracknell, dressed in forest green. While Joan Greenwood tends to seize attention, deservedly so, Edith Evans is every bit as magnificent a force as an actress here.

Margaret Rutherford is wonderful as Miss Laetitia Prism. She is here recounting one of her more distressing bouts of distraction, which proves the plot bedrock for the play.

Algernon Moncrieff (Michael Denison) and Cecily Cardew (Dorothy Tutin) who he meets and within a few minutes is proposing to her, which is not surprising to her as she has already written in her diary about their engagement, and has a box of letters she wrote to her, from him, which was required as they'd never met and so she was forced to write them on her own.

We were in need of comedy, so I turned to Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1952), which Marty had never seen. Cast to perfection under the direction of Anthony Asquith who also directed "Pygmalion" 1938.

Here is a picture of a production drawing for the lost 1946 BBC production of The #ImportanceofBeingEarnest , starring Margaret Rutherford (“a **handbag**!?”), which I just bought. Previously, it was owned by the iconic BBC TV producer, Cecil Madden.

Brilliant night at @nationaltheatre.bsky.social #importanceofbeingearnest boldly, imaginatively and hilariously tweaked for C21st. Beg, borrow, steal a ticket (it’s sold out🥲). Or see in at the cinema in February.
