A painting depicting a Madonna-and-child style image, but with a contemporary twist. A woman and a young child are shown behind a chain-link fence. The fence is prominently featured, its metallic gray color contrasting with the warm tones of the painting's figures.

The woman holds the child close, and both are partially obscured by the fence. The woman wears a magenta-colored shirt, and the child is in a red shirt and blue pants. They appear to be wrapped in a silvery, plastic-like material, suggesting a makeshift shelter or protection.

The woman and child are positioned in the center, framed by a yellow halo-like circle behind them. This is reminiscent of traditional religious iconography, but the modern setting with the fence creates a powerful juxtaposition. There are also what appear to be graffiti-style markings in the upper left and right corners of the image, adding to the contemporary feel. The overall style is somewhat realistic, but with a slightly stylized and painterly quality. The expressions on the faces of the woman and child are somber and convey a sense of vulnerability and confinement.

It's International Migrants Day!

Today, we celebrate all the ways that migrants have benefited our communities.

We're working together to fight the rising prejudice that migrants and new Canadians face.

It's #InternationalMigrantDay. If there's one topic I've covered a lot this year, it's migration. From the Darién in Panama to Tijuana at the US border, I keep being amazed by the lack of strategy by authorities on one side, and the resilience from migrants on the other. A neglected phenomenon.

Our results imply that current citizenship regimes in European countries tend to prevent access to naturalization precisely for those who could gain from it in terms of improved labor market integration.

1) does acquiring citizenship improve labor market outcomes of refugees, and does the impact differ from the effects for comparable non-refugee migrants?

2) does naturalization benefit the most immigrants who struggle to integrate and, therefore, to naturalize?

On #internationalmigrantday :

we present some novel research connecting two seemingly distant areas of migration policy – specifically, asylum regimes and naturalization laws – both central to the ongoing political discourse in Europe.
