So few people even know we exist, and the current US administration is trying to erase us as part of their attack against transgender people. If we don't speak for ourselves, who will? Why I Speak Out.

Why I Speak Out. Everyone should be able to choose what is best for their body. I was diagnosed with Klinefelters at 15 and given a choice to go on testosterone or not. But depending on the state I might not have that same choice if I’m transgender. Intersex and trans rights go hand in hand.

What’s at stake for intersex people today? Legal existence, bodily autonomy, and attempted erasure by the administration. This is why intersex and trans rights are deeply connected. #IntersexAwarenessWeek #TransIntersexSolidarity

Reproductive freedom means choice & consent for intersex people, too. Many intersex people have that freedom stripped from them due to nonconsensual sterilizing surgeries in childhood. This #IntersexAwarenessWeek we show up for reproductive choice for all. #WhyWeShowUp

Why I Show Up. People have always been born with intersex traits; but since the 19th century, physicians have tried to hormonally and surgically “normalize” these bodies. I show up for intersex rights because everyone deserves to make their own medical decisions about how their bodies will look and function. Elizabeth Reis displays her book, Bodies In Doubt.

Dismantling hate starts with dismantling ignorance. It’s easier to hate something you don’t understand, and harder to hate someone you recognize as human.

Intersex people deserve control over their bodies. Despite opposition from healthcare and human rights groups, surgeries to “normalize” children’s bodies based on stereotypes continue today. They often result in complications, loss of sensation & sterilization. Let kids grow up and decide for themselves! Image of Desmond, a Black intersex person with dark, curly hair pulled back, glasses and facial hair. They wear a colorful outfit and stand at the beach with a forearm crutch.

There is no wrong way to have a body. Intersex peoples’ bodies just develop a little differently to the usual male/female binary paths–and that’s perfectly okay. #IntersexAwarenessWeek @interact_adv interactadvocates.org/faq/
