The Irish people permit our government to send our troops into harm's way in limited circumstances (via the Triple Lock)

If the government want us to give them greater powers to send troops into harm's way, then they should hold a referendum.

Government is bringing foward legislation to scrap the triple lock, and therefore our neutrality.

There's a reason why (when in opposition) Micheál Martin said the triple lock was "at the core" of our neutrality.

We have to stop this.

Screenshot of two paragraphs from the linked opinion piece in the Irish Times by Eoin Drea:

First screenshotted paragraoh: "Ireland should focus on process, not content, in its upcoming presidency of the EU. We need to leave our confused policy inconsistencies at home and focus instead on being administrative nerds bent on reaching compromises. But to do this – in an impartial and successful way – requires an understanding of just how far off-piste Dublin’s policies appear to many other EU states."

Second screenshotted paragraph:

"It will require us to acknowledge that Germany (and other states) have a fundamental loyalty to Israel borne out of the horrors of their own 20th-century history. These ties are pivotal to their understanding of responsible statehood today. On Ukraine, Ireland needs to leave the eulogising of neutrality at home and grasp the sense of panic pervading our eastern EU neighbours. On potential enlargement, Ireland needs to understand how this issue is intrinsically linked to the future of the EU budget

This is why we benefit from having the need for UN Security Council or General Assembly consent for sending DF members out into an international military force.

Remove that, and we lose a key defence against that sort of phenomenon at EU level.

Get this: at the same time as breaking faith with us, they ask us to trust them as they dismantle the 1960 statutory commitment to working through the UN when it comes to sending Irish soldiers overseas with international forces.

That’s a bridge I’m not buying.

Charter and international law.
The Union’s common security and defence policy is an integral part of the common foreign and
