Ghazal number 6. It is in no way traditional. The couplets are loosely connected via theme. This time, it’s jazz.

It’s quarter to twelve;
the moon must be high —
a silver-blue crescent,
her back to the city.

		But we can’t see her
		through the windows of the club,
		painted black ... painted shut.

The band is tired
but blowing pretty;
the alto’s frantic,
the piano’s sly.

		And the drums strike twelve,
		though we take it on trust;
		the clock above the bar’s long stopped.

The piano player’s dancing
(if that’s what you call it):
head down, arms out,
shoes shuffle soft.

		And the bass like the engine room
		of some blue-riband liner
		thrums through the waves of acrid smoke.

Up past the ceiling
somewhere in the city,
somewhere there’s a church clock:
quarter past twelve.

		The tables are vibrating
		to the rhythm of arrhythmia;
		the band blows skittish, blows hot, blows on...

Directly 15 blocks north from our front door is the site of Langston Hughes (1901-1967) childhood home in Lawrence, Kansas with his grandmother, Mary Langston. He lived here until he was 13 yo. (Only the site- original house was demolished.)

Langston Hughes (1901–1967) was a pioneering poet, playwright, and essayist of the Harlem Renaissance. His work celebrated the lives, struggles, and dreams of Black Americans with clarity, rhythm, and heart. Known for blending jazz cadences with powerful social commentary, Hughes gave poetic form to the voices of everyday people, making him one of the most influential literary figures of the 20th century.
