Protests and rolling road checks in Jordan are disrupting movement around Amman, with higher risk on Thursdays and Fridays. Airport transfers can slow suddenly, so wider buffers matter. #JordanTravel

A pigeon is perched on a small stone window in an ancient edifice in Jordan. The space is dark with most of its limited light coming in through the one window.

Here’s a version of the classic view of ‘The Treasury’ as you emerge from the Siq, a 1km long narrow canyon. This is the ‘Indiana Jones’ view This photo is enhanced by the morning sunlight warming the face of the elaborate carved sandstone edifice.
Here’s a shot of some of the elaborate architectural details the Nabataeans carved into the sandstone. As traders and contemporaries of the Greeks, Romans, and late-period Egyptians, the Nabataeans liberally incorporated figures and design elements from these cultures.
A gorgeous view framed by the narrow canyon walls and capped by a signature Jordanian blue sky, enhanced by thin wisps of clouds.
A full view of ‘The Treasury’ with tourists in the foreground for scale and context. It’s noteworthy that, while ‘The Treasury’ is the most famous edifice in Petra, it is not the largest. High above Petra’s main valley, is another, larger edifice, called ‘The Monastery’. Ironically, neither of these actually functioned as they have been named. They are thought to have been massive tombs or ceremonial sites.
For #Stunday, I’m going to the archive for classic shots of ‘The Treasury’ at #PetraJordan

This is an eighth century #fresco detail from #QasrAmra in #Jordan. I love the rich and varied tones of blue and other colors. The somewhat primitive figure and the palette somehow remind me of late 19th century works by Gauguin

In the photo, we see many “buildings” carved into the sandstone cliffs and hills. To the right is a huge amphitheater, similar to Roman design, but entirely carved out of sandstone. Rectangular carvings above the theater might have been mausoleums for prominent families. There are hundreds of similar views in Petra and it is still being excavated. One of our guides told us that only 30% of the city has been excavated. Petra (Greek for Rock) was a busy trading center for the spice and incense trade via land-based caravans. The Nabataeans controlled a critical portion of the trade route and grew wealthy facilitating the trade between China and India and the Mediterranean region. While much of the architecture in Petra has Greek influence, the Nabataeans also incorporated design elements from Rome, Egypt, and India in their buildings and arts. Hat tip to Wikipedia. For #Scape Friday, I share a #landscape / #cityscape from world-famous #Petra. This grand city was the capital of the #Nabataean kingdom. The Nabataeans were contemporaries of the Greeks and Romans.

I took some liberties with the color settings to romanticize this shot a bit. Please excuse me if I have crossed a line of good artistic taste 😉 Hope you enjoyed your visit to Qasr Al-Mshatta!
We conclude our tour of Qasr Al-Mshatta with this view. I love seeing the modern shipping container through the ancient entrance arch. History and present coincide so often in #Jordan. This is a wonderful example.

A nice view through a narrow doorway in the palace. I especially love the reflected warmth of the light on the left side of the doorway.
Two simple doorways align with late morning sun warming the farther wall. The bright blue Jordanian sky caps the sun-gold wall.
Another peek-a-boo doorway with a shipping container in our sight. Love the layers of light.
A few more from Qasr Al-Mshatta…
These give a few more nice looks inside and from inside the palace.

A view from the main aisle of the palace looking back through the grand entrance arches. Note the unusual tapered stone columns in the foreground. In the distance, modern industrial buildings are visible. Hat tip to Wikipedia for some of my textual content. Please consider making a donation to support this invaluable resource.
Semi-circular structure beside the throne room with a signature Jordanian blue sky.
A large arched ceiling inside the palace. Note the excellent brick work.
More superb brickwork in the palace.
Architectural details from Qasr Al-Mshatta. I’m not an expert, but Wikipedia tells us that the palace was constructed in an Umayyad style for Caliph Al-Walid II.

This is the grand entrance e to the palace itself. Construction is of bricks and stone. These arches have been reconstructed (notice the new lighter colored stone blocks and architectural details). At the far end of the palace is the horizontally curved throne room. The palace was surrounded by a large enclosed courtyard, with guard stations arrayed around the perimeter. The palace construction was started around 743 A.D.. Unfortunately, the Levant region suffered a major earthquake in 749 A.D., and the complex was never completed.
Arch detail showing design details and construction materials — original and new.
More arch details. Note severe erosion of the sandstone capital in the foreground.
Another view of arches at the grand entrance to the palace.
I’m going to do a little series on one of Jordan’s “Desert Castles”, Qasr Al-Mshatta (translates to “Winter Palace”).
It is located near Amman’s international airport and is surrounded by ongoing businesses. Your Google Map can take you there.

Hi Ulla — love your post. My wife and I lived in #jordan for four years and visited #jerash three times. In addition to the long colonnade and the central ellipse, the site also has the amazing Hadrian’s Arch and extensive ruins of huge temples.

Also known as the Valley of the Moon, Wadi Rum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It hosts many Bedouin camps, which provide guided tours and wonderful hospitality. In addition to “The Martian”, Wadi Rum has served as a dramatic setting for many other movies: Lawrence of Arabia, Dune 1, Dune 2, and some of the Star Wars and John Wick movies. If you are thinking of visiting, avoid the summer months — it can be brutally hot there.
Need a little adventure for the weekend?
Here’s a pano of Wadi Rum in southern #Jordan. This rugged red #landscape was a major setting for the movie “The Martian” (can’t you tell?).
This is a very quiet place at night under the stars — very peaceful.

This photo was taken at the Citadel, a major historical sites in Amman. The children (look for all of them 😊) are climbing on and around parts of the massive columns that once supported the roof of a huge temple honoring Hercules. I love the close, casual relationship between Jordan’s dynamic present and its pervasive ancient history. I think this picture captures a bit of this wonderful trait.
Good Morning Blueskyers!
For your Friday, here’s a favorite from our time in #jordan.
I love how carefree the children seem as they climb on the massive fallen column parts from the Roman temple ruins in the background.

GMA — for your Thursday. This is a #cityscape of one of #amman #jordan many hills. This is a pretty typical hill vista with a jumble of homes and businesses climbing from a main road in the valley to the top of the hill. The sun highlights the odd geometries.

The small darkness in the center of the horizon is Qasr Bishr. I had to crest a small hill to locate it in an expanse of rocky desert. It’s not clear why the Romans placed a military outpost here.
A dirt path leads up a small hill to the fortress. I was the only visitor during my time at the ruins. This sort of experience was common for me as I visited 2nd and 3rd tier historical sites in Jordan.
The main entrance door has somehow survived earthquakes and time. You’ll notice a little graffiti to the right of the door.
Good Morning Blueskyers!
A little historical diversion for your enjoyment…
In the middle of the barren desert in central Jordan lies an imposing ruin, Qasr Bishr. It was built by the Romans as a military outpost around 300 AD. See ALTs for a little more…
