The Ides of March (1911) (K.P. Kavafis; translated Peter J. King & Andrea Christofidou) O soul, beware of splendour! If you cannot master your ambitions, follow them with care and caution. And the higher you advance, the more alert and critical you need to be. And when you reach your pinnacle – a Caesar! – when you don the mantle of a celebrated man, above all then be careful when you walk the streets, a man of patent power with his retinue. And if it happen that a certain Artemídoros comes through the crowd around you, carrying a letter, urgently insisting: “Read this now, it’s something that you need to know”, don’t fail to stop. Don’t fail to put off every conversation, every piece of business, brush off those who greet you, give you honour (see them later); even let the Senate wait, and straightaway discover Artemídoros’ grave words.
