This is why writing about history is so cool. Whether you write fiction or nonfiction, we help our readers travel through time! #kidlitchat
Amazing. Transcription is so cool. #kidlitchat
Ohhhhh this brings back memories. The sounds of the machine as you click through. I felt like a real journalist hunting for secrets in archives.

Words like these really remind me how old I'm getting... I LIVED in the records room, reading old newspapers. ;) I feel like "cursive" is becoming one of those now too. (One of my past "hobbies" was to transcribe old ship logs that were written in fancy 1700-1800s cursive.) #kidlitchat #oldshiplogs
Ugh.... Holidays. Today was my Monday/Tuesday so I completely forgot it was #kidlitchat tonight. Looks like I will have to catch up with the feed and join in the chat next week! See everyone then.
#KidLitChat Of Course! Ive been watching for it to come out since first seeing it announced. I can’t wait to read it!
Hehehe.
Alice in Wonderland was a warning to all researchers. I never finished it though. Fell down the rabbit hole again. #kidlitchat
Thank you. #kidlitchat
You never know what context will inspire your art. That’s fantastic that you do that level of research.
The more you know. #kidlitchat
Awww. I know. SUCH a good book. I read it in college.
My go-to rabbit books as kids were:
Bunnicula as well as What do you call a Dumb Bunny?
Fun fact: bunnies can be litter trained.

Yes! I would argue that it's important for all mss to have at least a couple of read-alouds from other folks. Even non-rhyming books. Even novels (though they might just be willing to read a chapter or two--but that's still helpful)! #KidLitChat

I ❤️ #NPM!!! Heartland is rubbing shoulders with so many awesome verse novels on your list. Thank you for including it, Christiana! #kidlitchat
Oohhh Zephyr has been a favorite word of mine since childhood. Great name.
My bunny’s name is Sailor. She’s a lovely loaf who says hello between chewing on hay. #kidlitchat
It is imperative! I try to have at least three people read it out loud for me so I get a sense of where any cadence breaks might exist. So helpful! #KidLitChat
Oh no... I've been offline until #KidLitChat ... What news did I miss while I was avoiding the world today?
Organizing ideas for a manuscript can be a trek in wilderness for sure.
I was chatting with an editor about a pitch and realized I wanted to tell EVERY story at once. And she asked a great question: “That’s really interesting. But do kids want to read that?”
Alas. Probably not. #kidlitchat
The characters want what the characters want! #KidLitChat
I love to ask someone who hasn't read or seen my manuscript at all to read it aloud to me. That way I can hear where the rhythm isn't working ... and to find the spots where it really is working well. :) #KidLitChat

And it is very hard to pick up errors in your own work even when you read it aloud because you are so married to your rhythmic intentions. #KidLitChat
Yes. Rhyme is difficult to do well, but even people who don't know *why* it isn't working will notice that it isn't done well. Bad rhyme (even mediocre rhyme) can be jarring enough for readers that it makes sense to me that agents/editors are picky about it. #KidLitChat
I like researching too and have fallen down a few of those rabbit holes. #kidlitchat
And pronunciations aren’t universal so you have to be really careful; Wild can be one or two syllables in a read allowed, depending on where the reader is from #KidLitChat
Rhyming is so tricky! It’s a skill #kidlitchat
I love that you made these! #kidlitchat
This IS a fun fact! Thanks for sharing #KidLitChat
Fun fact: microfiche and microfilm are two different, but very similar, formats. I used to really enjoy doing the research that meant I got to use the microfiche or microfilm readers. Now, so much is digitized that a lot of people don't have those experiences. #KidLitChat
