So satisfying! Although now the weather is warm again and I can go cut glass! I will definitely be spending more time with this medium! And there are fewer bandaids involved!

This is all because of the cold snap! It was too cold to cut glass... Second project done. 🙂 This will end up being a class in May, I suspect!

Nothing like your first! I repurposed (and edited) a stained glass pattern. #art #handmadeart #quiltart #kinusaiga
Two framed Kinusaiga pieces in white frames. The larger one is called "Flaming Colors of Sunset" by Hannah of @needleorthread. The smaller piece is my own crafting work from a kit she provided via a class I took from her.
I am so pleased to see folks interested in #Kinusaiga.
These two are on my work shelf, thanks to @needleorthread.bsky.social! The small mini quilt is her project kit I completed, the larger work is "Flaming Colors of Sunset" by her.
I am looking forward to trying to make my own pieces in future!
My complete mini Kinusaiga quilt project! A rectangle resembling a mini quilt made up of a variety of colourful squares. It is placed in a small white shadowbox frame.
I finished the #Kinusaiga kit I started last weekend!
This was fun and relaxing. I can tell that I need more experience to refine my technique and do better with preparing the materials, but I learned a lot in this process and now I am thinking about my own future Kinusaiga projects. 😍
Eight columns and seven rows of "mini quilt" squares. I've got six more rows to go.
I worked a bunch this evening on the #Kinusaiga kit while watching YouTube videos.
Supplies arrived this evening, including a better precision craft knife and an adhesive removal block.
Five rows and six columns complete in my Kunusaiga quilt kit.
My progress from last night. I think doing a row or two is very satisfying. At this rate, I should be done by the end of the weekend.
#Kinusaiga
Completed four rows and five columns of patchwork squares for a mini Kinusaiga quilt.
After a tricky day at work (mostly a distracting headache), I spent some time working on another layer of my #Kinusaiga kit.
The kit feels so generous in the number of fabric patches that I could do another project with the scraps.
Also, this craft does a great job using up small patches of cloth.
The foam board covered with double-sided tape with the cut pattern: a grid of small squares. One square has been removed, exposing the adhesive material.
A piece of blue fabric with white polka dots has been adhered to the board and the edges are tucked into the cuts.
Four squares, two of which are on the edge of the board, have been covered in fabric.
Twelve squares, including the corner, have been covered in fabric.
I took a really fun #Kinusaiga class tonight and learned the basics to effectively create pieces. The class came with a kit I plan on completing. The process is fairly relaxed and meditative. It involves tucking fabric into cuts made in a carved material, in this case foam board. Adhesive assists.

In an Art Nouveau style Kinusaiga stands a purple fairy. She is holding a long stemmed purple rose to her face. She has a large lavender and a smaller white rose in her hair by her unseen ear. Her dark purple hair forms into a long braid down her purple print wings. A strip of dark purple crushed velvet and iridescent gold forms a border to the wings by her shoulders. The crushed velvet also rims her arm. Her hair is adorned with 6 metallic gold Mackintosh roses as is a gold thread that starts at at the border in the crushed velvet and flows down a little farther than her hair braid. It has 8 Mackintosh roses on it. In Art Nouveau style, she is flanked by vertical metallic gold sections that are jeweled with round green gems, crystal AB blocks and green print fabric. Where her wings exist in the same space on the left, her wings are also jeweled by gems. Instead of green rounds, they are purple. She has a red bead for her lips and she is standing in front of an iridescent shape that subtly changes pastel colors from purple to green. Is it a partial moon? You decide. The sky is black with metallic gold horizontal lines scraping across. Next to her is a stylized tree with green print and metallic gold trunk. The leaves are a bright gold and green print reminiscent of Gustav Klimt’s work. In the tree are gold metal leaves and gold Mackintosh roses that also fall from the tree. This Kinusaiga piece is 10 x 16”. This technique is from Japan. It is fabric tucking into foam or wood to resemble art quilts or paintings, determined by the skills of the maker.
This is another view of the art , from a distance and on an angle.
This is the inspiration for Purple Fairy. It is a gesso panel from 1928, by Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh and her husband, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who were the Glasgow Art Nouveau Movement. Their Mackintosh Rose motif is still popular today. This panel was also interpreted in a bronze plate.

This is a 14 x 19" fabric picture of a butter colored fairy with blue wings and blue hair sitting in a tree. The blue flowers become a scarf that wraps around her upper arms and turns into another flower at the top right. Her gown and her skin are the same swirly metallic, butter-colored fabric so there is no mistaking her for human. Her hands are clasped below her neck. One foot is visible at the bottom right. Kinusaiga is a Japanese fabric tucking technique in which the finished product resembles a pieced art quilt. The fabric is tucked into wood or insulation foam board that is first carved with the design. An adhesive layer is desirable under the fabric for a smooth appearance.

"Blue Fairy"
Insulation foam, fabrics.
The original version of this fairy is on RU Pinterest. I loved it instantly, seeing parts that would challenge my tucking skills. I can’t draw from scratch but did edit some things, my color choices.

Quilt art of the backs of 2 women, the purple dressed on in the right is heavier than the wine dressed thinner woman on the left. They are standing under a bright yellow print umbrella looking out to green hills and golden mountains. There are some gray clouds in the glittery white sky but they stand together on dark golden ground to weather any storm.

My second attempt.
The underlayer is made of "styrofoam" (by now I have done another work on a "penoplex" (Extruded polystyrene foam) - it works great).
